Charlie Adams wants to follow the example of Stuart Dallas in using a loan spell to cement a place in Brentford’s starting XI.
The 20-year-old made his Football League debut in March 2013 and was handed a First-Team contract just over a year later before making his second league appearance in April 2014 away at Colchester.
Charlie spent time on loan at Barnet in the Football Conference last season and he felt that he proved himself good enough to play at that level.
Now he wants to step up to League football and follow the example of Stuart who spent a month on loan at Northampton in Sky Bet League Two last season before cementing himself in The Bees League One, and now Championship, side.
Speaking to Bees Player Charlie said: “For me The Championship is a big step.
“The likes of Alan Judge and Alex Pritchard are top players and I can’t expect them to be dropped, even if they have a bad game, for me.
“I think I need to go out and get some experience in the Football League at a team that suits me.
“That is the most important for me now.
“I need to prove to the management staff that I can handle League Two and even League One.
“I went out to the Conference last year, which is a very hard league physically, and I proved myself there.
“I want to go out on loan to get that experience in men’s football in the Football League.
“Stuart Dallas went out on loan for a month and did really well, he set up a few goals and scored as well.
“If you can go out and get some games then you will come back fit and ready they will through you in especially if you are doing well in training.
“That is what it is like here; if you are doing well then the manager will throw you in.”
Charlie was speaking after the Development Squad’s 2-1 win over Coventry City at Jersey Road on Monday.
Goals from Bradley Clayton and Gradi Milenge, either side of a Jordan Shipley leveller for the home side, secured the three points for The Bees.
It was a game that Brentford dominated and Charlie feels that they need to be more clinical if they want to progress further in the game.
The Bees missed a host of first-half chances and the midfielder said that they cannot afford to miss those chances once they break into the First-Team.
“I think it was a deserved three points,” said Charlie.
“We had an experienced side out with the likes of Toumani Diagouraga, Nico Yennaris and myself.
“We created chances but we should have taken more of them.
“We kept the ball well and dominated the game.
“We deserved the three points but it should have been more than 2-1.
“It is a learning curve and it is Development Squad football.
“In the Championship you only get one chance and you have to take them.
“That is what the first-team did on Saturday, they took their chances and it was 2-0.
“That is the margin.
“You can’t afford to miss your chances.
“We missed a few and if we were playing against a better team we could have got punished for that.
“If we hadn’t gone up the other end and got the goal then I think Jon wouldn’t have been happy with us.
“You have to win these games.
“It is a learning curve but you have to learn to win too.
“You want to play well but the important thing is to win.”
Charlie joined The Bees’ Academy from the Community Sport’s Trust’ Futsal programme as a 14-year-old before signing full-time terms four years ago.
In that time Brentford have gone from a side looking to stay in League One to a side with ambitions of the Premier League.
Charlie said that the standard of the players at the club has improved dramatically in the last few years and said that it is important that he keeps pace with that improvement too.
“I enjoy my time with the first-team and I am improving,” said Charlie.
“I have been here full-time for four years now and the standard has improved unbelievably.
“We have players coming in from overseas and that standard is always getting better.
“A lot of players have come in from overseas and from top Premier League clubs like Arsenal but these are the games where I prove that I can do bits and that I am a good player.
“You can tell the club is going places.
“You have to play well when you do get to play in the Development Squad.
“You can never sack it off because someone is always there to take your spot.”
