Sheffield Wednesday finished in mid-table last season and new owner Dejphon Chansiri will be expecting an improvement for the coming campaign. According to local newspaper reports Carlos Carvalhal from Portugal will be appointed as Head Coach for the 2015/16 to replace Stuart Gray.
Chansiri spent £37.5m buying out Milan Mandaric earlier this year and wants to see Wednesday back in the top flight by the time of the Club’s 150th anniversary in 2017. The Club have been no higher than ninth since leaving the Premier League in 2000.
They began last season well, losing only one league match until the middle of September. The side’s confidence was knocked by a 7-0 defeat at Manchester City in the Capital One Cup, which began a run of 11 games without a win.
The poor form continued until mid-February, when three league wins out of four halted the slide. Two wins, against Brentford and away to Rotherham United, in the final eight games were enough to see Wednesday safe from relegation worry.
Goalkeeper Keiren Westwood was Wednesday’s stand out player last term, making the PFA Sky Bet Championship Team of the Year. Former Leeds United defender Tom Lees missed only two matches following his move from Elland Road last summer.
Wednesday will be looking to increase their goalscoring ability next term, as Chris Maguire and Atdhe Nuhiu finished as top goalscorer with only eight apiece. Eleven Players were released in May, with new contract offers to four others, including Maguire.
New Coach Carvalhal will be hoping that Chansiri backs him in the transfer market, otherwise their supporters dreams of Premier League football will remain just that.
