Head Coach Lee Carsley gave his reaction to the resounding 3-0 victory over Charlton Athletic at The Valley.
“I thought we started the game jittery [in the] first 20 minutes,” said Lee. “I was worried going into the game about the energy levels because I realised we’d expended a lot against Wolves to keep them suppressed and at bay.
“We knew we’d get better as the game wore on. I was wary of the fact we’d start slow given the form that Charlton were in, I knew they would start fast, but that’s where you need you defenders to defend; Harlee, Tarky and Butts were outstanding in that period, keeping them at bay. As the game went on, we got better and got stronger, got our legs back, [and] scored at a good time with Swifty, a nice move.”
The confidence of the squad has seen a marked improvement on and off the pitch, with the Head Coach explaining why.
“We’ve spoken about it during the week how quick they have seemed to turn their confidence round,” said Lee. “They are good players; it’s down to them, their attitudes, the way that they’ve worked, their work ethic, the way that they pull together. It’s good now that the new signings are starting to get more involved, part of a winning team because that will do their confidence good and hopefully they will all realise how important they are to the Club.”
When pressed on his stance of accepting a new Head Coach will come in, Carsley’s position remained unchanged despite three victories in a week.
“Nothing’s changed,” said Lee. “The main thing is that the Club’s in a better position now than what it was after the Birmingham game. Like I said all along, it’s a fantastic job and a really good club. It’s a job that a first-time manager shouldn’t be in. This is a fantastic job for an experienced manager to take it into the Premier League, especially with the players that we’ve got. You think of the players that are in the treatment room that will be coming back, this team’s only going to get stronger.”
