David Button said he was delighted to get the chance to come to Brentford and wanted to be a part of what was happening at Griffin Park.
The goalkeeper joined The Bees on Tuesday, less than 24 hours after Simon Moore – who had been first choice between the sticks for most of the 2012/13 season – joined Premier League Cardiff City.
David said the move from Charlton Athletic for an undisclosed fee happened quickly but as soon as he heard there was a chance of coming to Griffin Park, he wanted it to happen.
David, who started out at Tottenham Hotspur and came through the youth ranks at White Hart Lane, has committed to a deal that will keep him at Brentford until the end of the 2014/15 season.
After loan spells at clubs including AFC Bournemouth, Shrewsbury Town, Crewe Alexandra, Barnsley and Doncaster Rovers he joined Charlton from Tottenham last summer.
He started six games for the South London side last season, five of them in The Championship, before making the move to TW8.
“Everyone knows Simon Moore moved on to Cardiff and I am delighted to get my chance,” he said, speaking to Bees Player on Tuesday.
“It happened quickly but as soon as Brentford knew Simon was off they acted quickly to get someone in.
“Everyone knows the progress Brentford have made over the past couple of season and this was something I want to be a part of.
“The Club is on the up and I think I can bring something to the team.
“Last season was frustrating at times.
“It didn’t go as well as it could.
“You find out a little about yourself.
“It was a test but now I am looking forward to playing again.”
David will join a group of goalkeepers at Griffin Park that includes Richard Lee, on his way back to fitness after a shoulder injury, and Jack Bonham, who arrived at Brentford from Watford earlier this summer and who has impressed in pre-season.
He said he is looking forward to getting to know them and Goalkeeper Coach Simon Royce and fighting for the First Team spot.
“I relish the challenge of competing for places,” he said.
“I know about the two goalkeepers here and we will be fighting to play.
“I am looking forward to the competition and getting to know them.
“I have met Simon Royce and he seems like a good guy.
“It’s always strange, goalkeepers are rivals but we usually get on.
“I have got on well with everyone wherever I have been and look forward to doing that.”
David spoke to Bees Player hours before Brentford’s 3-2 win over Cardiff in a pre-season friendly on Tuesday.
He said he wanted some game time before the start of the Sky Bet League One season on Saturday.
David added he was looking forward to the challenge of pushing for promotion from League One this season.
“I can’t wait to get going,” he said.
“The friendly is a great chance for the fans to get to see me and I can get to know my team mates.
“The season kicks off soon.
“I need to get to know everyone and it is important to get game time.
“The push for promotion is a challenge we are looking forward to.
“I can’t wait to get going.”
