Jon De Souza's Development Squad secured their first Under 21 Professional Development League Two South win of the season with a 2-1 success over Coventry City at a damp Jersey Road this afternoon.
The Bees took an early lead through Bradley Clayton and had chances to put the game to bed before half-time but a mixture of post and visiting goalkeeper Jake Richards kept The Sky Blues in the game.
The second-half was a much more even affair and Coventry struck the equaliser 20 minutes from time as Jordan Shipley beat the offside trap and fired home from 15 yards.
However Brentford responded instantly as Gradi Milenge smashed home from five yards after excellent work by Montell Moore to give Brentford the deserved three points.
After a disappointing 4-2 defeat to Crewe Alexandra on the opening day Brentford took command of the fixture from the referee's whistle.
With Toumani Diagouraga, Emmanuel Oyeleke and Jermaine Udumaga controlling the centre of midfield Coventry spent much of the early stages chasing shadows.
Brentford sounded an early warning shot when Richards was forced into a fine low save by Clayton after the Youth Team striker was found by Diagouraga.
Coventry failed to heed the warning and were punished on 11 minutes as Clayton dribbled into the box before firing low across Richards into the far corner to put The Bees ahead.
The Sky Blues could have fallen even further behind two minutes later as Oyeleke struck the bottom of one post with Clayton finding the outside of the other post on the rebound.
Clayton's movement was causing Coventry's defence all manner of problems and Richards made another fine save to turn away the diminutive strikers low shot from 12 yards.
Richards was all that stood between Brentford and a cricket score as he made another fine save to turn a Charlie Adams' shot behind and he then denied Nico Yennaris from the resulting corner.
The Sky Blues keeper then turned away an Adams' free-kick before again denied the Brentford man, this time from the edge of the box.
Moore was the next to test Richards before the visitors registered their first shot on goal in the 41st minute but Kyle Spence's effort was high and wide of Jack Bonham's goal.
Richards had the last say of the first-half denying Oyeleke and it looked as if the second-half would be a repeat of the first as Richards denied Udumaga seconds after the restart.
The Coventry keeper then made another fine save to thwart Adams and when he was finally beaten Devon Kelly-Evans was on hand to hook Moore's shot off the line to safety.
Having totally dominated the first hour of the game Brentford started to let their opponents back into the game with some sloppy passing.
Kelly-Evans's low shot was well held by Bonham on the greasy surface before Spence brought the best out of the former Watford man with a fierce drive that Bonham did brilliantly to turn away.
Dion Kelly-Evans headed Shipley's deep cross over the bar from five yards before Coventry did equalise as Shipley beat the Brentford offside trap and clipped the ball over the on-rushing Bonham from 15 yards.
Having totally dominated the game only to be pegged back Brentford could have let the frustration get to them but they responded well to the setback.
Tyrell Miller-Rodney saw his shot deflect behind for a corner, from which Moore waltzed into the box and pulled the ball back across the six yard box for Milenge to slam home from five yards.
Spence fired a free-kick straight into the arms of Bonham but it was The Bees who ended the game the stronger.
Miller-Rodney brought a more regulation save out of Richards while Moore shot straight at him when well placed.
Oyeleke almost added a third in the dying seconds but his scuffed shot seemed to take an age to trickle agonisingly wide of Richards' right-hand upright.
In the end the 2-1 score line was enough to give Brentford their first league win of the season ahead of their next outing against Colchester United on Tuesday week.
