The Brentford B Team drew 1-1 after 80 minutes with Danish side Odense Boldklub Under-19s, then managed to win the tie 7-6 on penalties. Bradley Clayton scored an equaliser in the second half after OB had taken an early lead at Vildbjerg Stadion on Friday morning.
Brentford got off to a better start than their opponents, creating two good chances in the opening minutes. Clayton got in behind the back four on both occasions, first seeing a shot saved and then nodding a James Ferry cross narrowly wide of the target.
OB scored after a large slice of luck in midfield. A low ball forward was deflected away from Manny Onariase at the last second, making it easier for the striker to get behind the lines and slot past goalkeeper Ellery Balcombe. Jarvis Edobor did well to get back on the line but couldn't direct it away from the target.
Flemming Pedersen's side could have had a penalty in the opening moments of the second half. Clayton was released on goal by Zain Westbrook, only to have his shooting foot taken away from him at the last second. The referee waved away the protests from both the field and the bench as OB set off on the counter attack.
The equaliser came halfway through the second half, with Reece Cole turning provider for Clayton. After a quick one-two with Marc Rio, Cole slotted the ball around the oncoming defenders and into Clayton's path. The forward took his time to set the shot, fake past his marker and then drive it into the bottom corner.
Brentford pushed on from there, dominating in a similar fashion to the game on Tuesday afternoon. A powerful performance from both centre-backs Onariase and Edobor allowed OB no space to attack, making it easier for The Bees to get forward and try their own combinations up front. Danny Parish could have made a chance for himself when cutting in from the left wing, but a second defender closed him down and prevented further danger.
A reduced game time of 80 minutes was agreed to before the tie was played, the idea being that slightly less game time and a bigger rest at half time could provide a higher intensity across each half.
At full time, with the scores level, both teams once again decided to take part in a penalty shootout. Parish, Edobor, Mepham, Clayton, Rio and Westbrook all scored from the spot. Balcombe saved two at either end of the list, allowing Lukas Tabro to step up and score the winning kick against his old side.
