Hundreds of thousands of people are currently pounding the streets of London in the name of sport and charity.
The 2013 Virgin London Marathon takes place today, Sunday April 21, and around 36,000 people will run from Blackheath to The Mall and cover the 26.2 mile course.
Brentford Football Club are represented at the event with two members of staff running the race.
Neil McIlhargey, Head of Performance Analysis, is running on behalf of AMREF.
He said: “My wife Helen works for GlaxoSmithKline and they run a secondment scheme for their staff, and she went to Kenya for six months last year and worked for a charity called AMREF.
“They work side by side with local communities in some of the most remote and underserviced areas in Africa making a difference in areas including: giving mothers and young children access to the healthcare they need to survive, tackling diseases such as malaria, TB and HIV/ AIDS, training healthcare workers and providing the African Flying Doctor Emergency Service.
“I’ve run the London Marathon before and when I got my place it was natural decision to help in any way that I could to supplement the good work she did out there and AMREF does as a charity.
“I think that by working in football I feel privileged and it’s nice to give something back as I’m very aware I’m lucky to work in an industry that I love and then to get paid for it as well.”
Danny Hallgarth works part time in the Club’s Medical Department.
He is running the Virgin London Marathon in order to raise money for the Get Kids Going charity.
Danny said: Get Kids Going is a great charity that aims to provide disabled children and young adults with access to a variety of different sports.
“This will be the first time I have ever taken part in a distance event and I am doing it for this great cause.”
