Joe Maloney said Crystal Palace’s Development Squad beat Brentford on Tuesday afternoon because they were “better in the final third”.
The Bees suffered their third straight loss in the Under-21 professional Development League Two South at Griffin Park on Tuesday afternoon.
Martin Fillo put The Bees in front but that goal was all they could manage from their possession.
Connor Dymond equalised from a corner for Palace before Ibra Sekajja scored a second half winner.
Midfield player Joe, speaking to Bees Player after the match, said Brentford were the better team but did not create enough with their possession.
He said they needed to be more decisive in and around the penalty area.
“I think we dominated overall and we had the better of the possession stats,” said Joe.
“But they were better in the final third and took their chances.
“That is what counts.
“I don’t think we broke them down.
“We had the ball in defence and midfield but when we advanced it broke down.
“They had less of the ball but attacked when they had it.
“They took their chances.
“I don’t know why it broke down for us today.
“We will go back to the Training Ground and work at being decisive in and around the penalty area.
“We can take that in to the next game.”
Brentford held their lead for just four minutes and Joe admitted it was frustrating to concede so soon after scoring.
The goal came from a corner and Joe described the defending as “criminal”.
He said The Bees took control again but conceded a long range goal and could not find a way back.
“It was frustrating to concede then,” he said.
“If we had gone it at half time 1-0 up it would have been different in the second half.
“We have three markers and four who block runners.
“I don’t think we blocked the man well enough.
“He got a header from inside the six-yard box.
“That was criminal.
“We got a grip of the game, were dominating and then they scored the second.
“That was a kick in the teeth.
“We were on top at that point.
“We picked it up again but weren’t creative enough.
“We could hear their players talking about defending and breaking on us.”
Joe has suffered with injuries over the past two years since signing a Youth Team scholarship in the summer of 2011.
His scholarship was extended for an additional three months and he was offered a professional contract in October.
Tuesday’s match was his first 90 minutes at Under-21 Professional Development League level and he described it as “tough on the legs”.
He said he wanted to kick on and play more games.
“It was tough on the legs but I was pleased to get back out there,” said Joe.
“It was my first 90 minutes in about four months.
“It was a good test.
“I haven’t played many full games.
“I have always been coming back from an injury or back to fitness.
“I want to kick on and get more 90 minutes.”
Joe said he feels no different as a professional to when he was a scholar.
He said he saw his contract, until the end of the 2013/14 season, as a chance to impress and secure a further deal.
“I don’t feel different, the moment you feel you are a professional you take your foot off the gas,” said Joe.
“I can’t do that.
“You have to work as if you are nobody and try to work your way up.
“I am not thinking ‘this is it’, this is my opportunity to kick on.”
