Joel Valencia has completed a season-long loan move to Dutch side De Graafschap.

The Ecuadorian winger finalised his deal to the second-tier side on Wednesday, subject to international clearance, before the transfer window closed in the Netherlands.

Joel joined the Bees from Piast Gliwice in the summer of 2019, playing 23 games as we finished third in the Sky Bet Championship in his first year at the Club, before losing in the Play-Off Final.

He spent 2020/21 on loan at Legia Warsaw in Poland and the second half of last season at Alcorcón in Spain, where he played 18 matches. Joel has now secured another loan move for the coming season.

Phil Giles, Brentford FC Director of Football, said: “We have been looking for a loan move for Joel so he can get some competitive football this season. This opportunity will hopefully give him that playing time. We wish him well during the coming months.”

Before moving to West London, Joel scored nine goals in 58 league appearances for Piast Gliwice and then played 12 games back on loan in Poland with Legia in 2020/21.

His first season with the Bees was interrupted by the COVID-19 outbreak but he did make 19 Championship appearances. He scored a memorable goal away at Reading and contributed another assist, with most of his games coming as a substitute. He played once in 2020/21, in a Carabao Cup tie against Wycombe Wanderers.

Joel started his career at Real Zaragoza and played in LaLiga for them as a teenager. Most of his football was played for Zaragoza B before moving to Atlético Malagueño, the reserve team of Malaga, on loan and then on to UD Logroñés in the Spanish lower leagues. He spent 18 months with FC Koper in Slovenia before the move to Poland.

He was born in Ecuador but moved to Spain at the age of eight and holds a Spanish passport. He played for both countries at youth level.

His new club, De Graafschap, are without a win in their first four matches in the Eerste Divisie. They finished ninth last season and are in their fourth year in the second tier after relegation in 2019. Their next match is against SC Telstar on Thursday.
