Brentford B picked up an impressive 4-1 win away from home against AS Monaco Under-21s on Wednesday morning.

Michael Olakigbe netted two stunning goals whilst Yehor Yarmoliuk and Ryan Trevitt also got on the scoresheet in what was an impressive performance from the young side.

It was a game where the hosts started brightly with lots of early possession. Enzo Baglieri had an effort from close range well saved by Roco Rees, who returned to the starting XI following injury.

Malamine Efekele had a couple of efforts as he looked dangerous when he cut in from the left. His first effort was pushed behind well by Rees whilst his second crashed against the near post.

As the first half wore on the Bees began to wrestle more control of the game as they took the lead five minutes before the break. The constant pressing unsettled the Monaco back line frequently and the pressure paid off when Yarmoliuk robbed the ball centrally before driving forward and slotting home in what was an identical goal to his strike against Aston Villa last week.

The goals in the first period weren’t done there, though, as Olakigbe grabbed his first of the game. His explosive pace saw him drive down the left before he cut in and fired home into the top right-hand corner right on the cusp of half-time to make it 2-0.

As expected, the home side came out after the break with a focus to get back into the game. Just three minutes after the restart they pulled a goal back when a ball was crossed low for Valentin Decarpentrie to slot home.

Despite grabbing a goal back, Monaco were unable to really trouble Rees as the Bees maintained a lethal threat on the counter-attack. On 68 minutes Olakigbe burst down the left before he crossed to the far post for Fin Stevens to shoot first time but the defender dragged his effort just wide of goal.

Another Olakigbe cross just missed the sliding Trevitt in the area whilst he then crossed for substitute Lucias Vine but his shot deflected for a corner. Olakigbe’s second then came with 10 minutes to play as he drove down the right and just into the area. After the defender allowed him too much space the right footed shot was too powerful for the keeper to handle as it beat him at his near post.

Some wonderful play from Trevitt then rounded off the match as he beat his man with some brilliant trickery to slot home and make it 4-1 from close range in what will be a memorable game from the 2022/23 campaign.
