Brentford Under-18s lost 2-0 to Bournemouth at Wheatsheaf Park on Saturday afternoon.

Two late second-half goals sunk the young Bees, who created good chances throughout the match but couldn't find their form in front of goal.

In the early stages, Gary McDermott's side played through the aggressive Bournemouth press really well.

The west Londoners' first chance came in the fifth minute when Nedved Owusu slid an excellent low cross along the six-yard box, which was somehow turned just over the bar by the Bournemouth defence.

On 20 minutes, the Cherries had their first threatening attack when Jake Drewett found space on the right but drilled his strike across goal and wide.

Coran Madden could have broken the deadlock soon after when Josh Zetter-Plummer intercepted the ball, beat two defenders, and fed the winger with a free strike at goal, but his effort flew inches wide of the far post.

Owusu then did well to fashion a chance after Otis Honor's switch of play. The Bees forward lifted the ball over the onrushing Zachary Melin but the angle was too tight for him to squeeze his effort into the back of the net with two Bournemouth defenders rushing back to cover their goalkeeper.

Honor then had a chance of his own, bursting into the box from Owusu's pass, but his deflected strike looped over the bar.

The Bees really began to turn the screw on 37 minutes, as Madden went on a mazy run and found Jai Bansoodeb in the box. His left-footed strike looked certain to hit the net, but two last-ditch sliding Bournemouth defenders denied Brentford the opener.

Felix Lyon made two good saves from Eugene Nyarko and George Chubinidze's strikes, and the sides went into the break goalless.

Bournemouth had the first chance of the second half. Drewett improvised his acrobatic attempt at the back post but sent his effort wide on the stretch.

Joe Spence then bent an effort narrowly wide for the visitors on the hour mark, before Domeiro Bobb-Semple's went close for McDermott's side with a flashed effort.

Lyon made an important sliding claim two minutes later as Cherries' skipper Zhaviah Campbell took a heavy touch when bearing down on goal.

Yerime Ouattara went desperately close for the Bees on 69 minutes, sending an excellent strike that had fans inside Wheatsheaf Park celebrating, only for the effort to cannon off the inside of the post and back into play.

Lyon did well to parry substitute Leyland Waite's long-range free-kick that skidded off the wet surface, before Kobaro Akaunu smashed the post for Bournemouth on 77 minutes.

Then, with just over 10 minutes to play, the Cherries took the lead when Nyarko popped up at the back post to volley home.

Jacob Hanson had a chance to level it at the death but couldn't beat Melin, and Bournemouth went down the other end and doubled their lead through Akaunu to seal the 2-0 victory.

The Under-18s are next in action on Saturday 13 January as they travel to the Leckwith Stadium to face Cardiff City (11.30am kick-off).
