Andre Gray said it was nice to get his first goal in a Brentford shirt.
He striker tapped home an Alex Pritchard cross in the second half of a 5-1 pre-season win against Barnet on Tuesday.
Andre had come close to scoring in the first half, forcing one great save from Barnet goalkeeper Graham Stack, and in the first pre-season game, against Boreham Wood.
He played an hour at Barnet and said he felt he would score.
He added he scored goals like that for Luton Town last season and hoped it would be the first of many.
“In the last few pre-seasons I have not scored as many goals as I would have liked,” said Andre, speaking to Bees Player after the Barnet fixture.
“It is nice to get off the mark and get my first goal.
“I had a couple of chances in the first half and I knew that, with playing another ten or 15 minutes in the second half, if I got another chance I would take it.
“It was a tap in.
“It was a great cross, the defender missed it, I needed a good contact and to direct it towards goals.
“Luckily it went in.
“I scored goals like that last year and hopefully I can get on crosses like that this year.”
Andre played 45 minutes against Boreham Wood but completed an hour against Barnet.
He said he now hoped to kick on and increase his match time in upcoming friendlies against OGC Nice, CA Osasuna and Crystal Palace.
Brentford spent 11 days in Florida earlier this month and Andre said the warm weather training was helping him build-up to the season.
“It can be frustrating playing 45 minutes, it was good to play an hour,” said the striker.
“I got more fitness in; I can now kick on and get more minutes.
“Pre-season is to get fit.
“It is good for me to get goals for my confidence, get off the mark early and try and take it in to the season.
“America was good.
“Having just signed, it was a chance to get to know everyone properly.
“It was hot but a great trip and we have benefited from it.
“The heat helped us, it was tough but it doesn’t feel as hot now, we adjusted to it out there.
“It is good to be out of your comfort zone.”
Brentford have a plethora of attacking options for three forward positions.
Andre said he had not played in the middle of a front three before and was learning the role but was confident of the service he would receive.
“I have my first goal and I know I can do better,” said Andre.
“I have more to work on; I am nowhere near my best at the minute.
“It takes time and by the start of the season I will be firing on all cylinders.
“I like to play on the shoulder of defenders.
“I didn’t play on my own down the middle last season at all, it is different and I am learning.
“I like to be on the shoulder and the way we play I can do that.
“I can stretch the opposition and our creative players can come in and do what they do best.
“The quality in the squad is unreal and everyone is still learning how to play with each other.
“I know I will get quality service but I have to be patient in games and take my chance when it comes.”
Brentford have used Stuart Dallas, Alan Judge, Pritchard, Moses Odubajo, Scott Hogan, Tommy Smith, Josh Clarke and Montell Moore in their front three in the opening two friendlies, as well as Andre.
“Competition is good, every player needs it,” said Andre.
“I saw a lot of what Scott did last year in League Two and he is a great addition.
“It is football.
“I need to work hard to get in the team and stay in the team.
“I will support him and I hope he will support me.
“If I am not in the team I will push him to do better because I will be working to get in the team.
“I don’t see it as competition; it is more to the benefit of the team.”
Brentford have three pre-season games remaining before they entertain Charlton Athletic at Griffin Park on August 9.
“I am not a fan of pre-season,” said Andre.
“The quicker the season starts the better.
“It is coming round quick, we don’t have long left and hopefully we can get a lot out of the next three games and be ready for Charlton.”
