Andre Gray said Brentford’s players were “gutted” not to take at least a point from their Sky Bet Championship match against Watford yesterday.
The Bees played the majority of the match with ten men after Jake Bidwell was sent off but had the lead as the game entered the last quarter.
But Odion Ighalo scored two, including a stoppage time winner, to give Watford the points.
Andre, speaking to Bees Player after the match, said Brentford had reacted well after Bidwell was dismissed and had chances.
He got on to a David Button ball to open the scoring but Brentford could not get over the line.
“The way we played the game, having gone down to ten men, we dominated and could have scored three or four,” said Andre.
“We are gutted, especially to lose it in the last minute.
“If we had got a 1-1 draw against Watford with ten men for most of the game we would have taken it happily.
“We adapted to the sending off well.
“We had our tails up after the sending off and at half time we talked about managing the game.
“Sometimes you need to play quickly sometimes you need to slow the game down.
“We did that well, they nicked the goal against the run of play and then got the second.”
Andre hailed Button for his role in the goal.
It was only his second goal in nine games and he admitted it was a relief to score.
“It was a really good kick by Butts,” said the striker.
“I tried to get my body in the way of the defender and managed to get away from him.
“My legs were going a bit, I wanted to put my foot through it and hit the target.
“Luckily it hit the roof of the net.
“There was a little bit of relief.
“We had been under pressure for a lot of the game and it was a good time to score.
“But we didn’t hold on so that relief turned in to disappointment.”
Andre explained his job in the team was not purely about scoring goals.
“My role is about more than scoring goals and any lone striker will tell you that,” he said.
“I do a lot of things that may go unnoticed.
“I hold the ball and play two-touch stuff, fans don’t always see that.
“We get chances for players all over the pitch, as long as I get chances I will be OK.”
The goal took Andre’s tally to 12 for the season in all competitions.
Last season he was playing for Luton in the Conference and he said he had made a large improvement, albeit there was still more to come.
“It is a huge leap,” said Andre.
“If anyone from Luton came to see me now they would see a different player.
“The improvement has been massive and I have a lot to learn.
“It’s a hard job leading the line, I feel I am adapting to it and I will get better.
“I need to try to put less pressure on myself.”
Brentford’s next game is away to Charlton Athletic on Saturday, February 14.
“We have generally bounced back,” said Andre.
“We didn’t deserve to lose; we will take the positives from today and look forward.”
