Alex Pritchard said he has spoken to Brentford Manager Mark Warburton about his role and has been tasked with reproducing the form he showed last season.
Alex joined The Bees on loan from Tottenham Hotspur last week, signing a season-long deal.
He spent last season at Swindon Town and played 36 Sky Bet League One games, scoring six goals, and 44 in all competitions, scoring eight times.
Alex was shortlisted for the Sky Bet League One Player of the Year, won by Brentford’s Adam Forshaw, and the Football League Young Player of the Year for his performances in 2013/14.
He made his first Brentford appearance in the pre-season friendly against Barnet and spoke to Bees Player: Match Day Live after the game.
“I have spoken to Mark about my role,” said Alex.
“He wanted me to play like I did at Swindon.
“I will be free but when we are defending I do my duties.
“Tonight it was to get on the ball and make things happen.
“I watched Alan Judge last year, I know he comes inside.
“We spoke about it before the game, when he comes inside, I filter out.”
Brentford beat Barnet 5-1 on Tuesday and Alex hailed the performance the team delivered after a slow start.
“They went 1-0 up in the first ten minutes but we settled in to the game nicely, moved the ball quickly and got in to some good positions,” he said.
“We put the ball in the net.
“We want to press form the front, get the ball as high as possible.
“I think everyone was outstanding.”
Alex said he had not set any aims for the campaign.
“I haven’t got targets,” he said.
“I want to get games, make some goals and hopefully scored a few goals.”
Brentford have three more pre-season friendlies remaining, all at Griffin Park.
They face OGC Nice tomorrow and CA Osasuna on Tuesday before a game against Crystal Palace on Saturday August 2.
“This is the second game of pre-season, we are still getting fitness,” said Alex.
“Nice is a big game.
“We have three to go and then the start of the season.”
