B Team duo Alex Gilbert and Ryan Trevitt feel that their individual performances are getting better and better after they helped the team to a 5-1 win over Crewe Alexandra on Saturday.
The young Bees came from behind to put on a scintillating second half display in a game where both players netted twice whilst Max Dickov grabbed the other goal for Neil MacFarlane’s side.
Both players, who have made First Team debuts, hope that their recent impressive displays for the B Team will keep them in the thoughts of the First Team staff.
“It’s what every young player wants, to get into that First Team,” explained Alex. “It’s competitive because there are a lot of good players at the Club, but hopefully we’re making the right steps.
Ryan added: “We’re both happy with how we played and we’re in good places and looking to push on. We got the ball down and played our football (v Crewe.) We really enjoyed it."
Elaborating on the game and how it panned out, Ryan, who made his First Team debut earlier this season against Colchester United in the Carabao Cup, explained: “I think we started well and then in the second half we were really clinical. In the first half we made some chances and got a goal. We shouldn’t have conceded which we’ll look at, but we were clinical. It was 5-1 and the boys are happy. We have to look to do that over 90 minutes now.
With the match level at 1-1 at the interval, Alex felt the side had some good moments but perhaps lacked that final ball- something which was apparent in the second 45 minutes.
“We were creating chances but weren’t quite finding that final ball,” explained the youngster who captained the B Team in Cheshire. “In the second half they were tiring, and our fitness showed which meant we were able to kill the game off. We got the goals that we deserved."
B Team highlights v Crewe
Both players combined brilliantly throughout the game as they displayed some free-flowing football, which is something that Alex believes has developed over time. He continued: “We’ve played together quite a few times so we’re building that bond which is what you want. When you have consistency with the players around you then you know where the strengths are and the movements they’re going to make, which I think showed.
“We’ve added some young lads to the team so we’ve got a mix of experience and youth, so I think it’s starting to show that we’re gelling together and improving our performances even more.”
