Alan McCormack said three wins in a week proved Brentford could challenge for promotion like they did last season.
The Bees went in to last week’s game against Colchester United on the back of three straight defeats, the last of which was a loss at Stevenage after Brentford had dominated the opening 15 minutes.
They trailed to Colchester United with 15 minutes to go but came back to win and followed that up with a victory against Bristol City on Tuesday.
They made it nine points in a week with a 1-0 win over Shrewsbury Town thanks to a winning goal from Marcello Trotta.
Alan said the squad were happy with their work over the past seven days and felt they were now chasing the teams at the top of Sky Bet League One.
“Football is up and down,” Alan told Bees Player after the match.
“Last Saturday at 3pm everyone was wondering if we could produce results and be as good as we were last season.
“I think we have proved we can.
“In the last three games we have won here twice and beat Bristol City away.
“We should have won by four or five today and we are a bit disappointed we didn’t.
“But we are very happy with three wins in a row and we have propelled ourselves up the league.
“We never lost belief.
“We have carried on working hard, as we did before the defeat at Stevenage.
“That was a blip, we went there on the back of a few defeats and it wasn’t a nice time.
“Sometimes when you lose two or three on the bounce the integrity of the squad gets questioned, the make-up of the team and where you are going.
“We have proved with three wins that we are coming for every other team.”
Brentford started strongly against Shrewsbury.
They took the lead after 16 minutes and could have had the game wrapped up by half time.
Alan said they felt they were a bit open defensively in the first period but were better after the re-start and were delighted with the clean sheet.
“We thought they would come here and try and play football,” he said.
“We knew we had to press them high up the pitch.
“The midfield were excellent, so were the forwards and the back four tried to defend the game well.
“We were a bit open in the first half and we tried to get tighter after the break.
“We did very well and we should be delighted.
“As a defender and being a part of the back four, it is great to get a clean sheet.”
Alan started his Brentford career in the centre of midfield but has played the last three games at right back.
He praised his team mates and the Brentford coaching staff for their work in helping him improve in the position.
“I don’t mind playing right back,” he said.
“I am confident in my ability to play there.
“I still need help and I can get better.
“If I am coached the right way I will get better.
“I have great lads alongside me and great coaches on the side-lines.
“No footballer wants to be on the bench or in the stands.
“At this club those that aren’t in the squad are buzzing, that shows the togetherness in the camp.”
Brentford climbed from mid-table in to the promotion race in the autumn of the 2012/13 season and Alan said the squad were looking to do the same, this time going one better than a third-place finish.
“We knew we were getting there,” he said.
“We had a shaky start last year and got going.
“After Stevenage we had a similar number of points to last year, we know how close we came.
“We are trying to go one better than last year.”
