Brentford Under-16s have qualified for the Premier League U16s national tournament in Spain this November.

The young Bees finished third in the southern section qualifying phase and will now face some of the country’s leading academies, alongside Spanish opposition, as they look to test themselves against some of the world's best.

The west Londoners navigated four challenging fixtures to finish among the top-four southern clubs, recording three wins and a draw. A 2-1 victory away at West Ham United got the campaign off to a positive start, before a 2-2 home draw against Aston Villa. Brentford followed that with a 2-0 win away at Bournemouth, before rounding off the qualifying fixtures with an entertaining 4-3 victory over Ipswich Town.

Those results secured progression to the national tournament, which will take place in Marbella, offering the players a valuable opportunity to continue their development in a competitive international environment.

For academy director David Rainford, qualification reflects the hard work of the players and staff, while providing another opportunity for the club’s young talent to experience new challenges.

“Qualifying for this tournament is a great achievement for the players and staff involved,” he said. “The results reflect the work that has gone into preparing the group, but the opportunity to compete against different opposition is just as important.

“We want our players to be continually challenged and to experience different environments as they develop. This tournament will give them the chance to test themselves against strong teams, learn from the experience and continue taking steps forward in their footballing journeys.”

The qualifying campaign required consistency across all four fixtures, with every result contributing to the final standings. Brentford showed their ability to win away from home, compete in closely contested matches and find a way through high-scoring encounters.

For games programme coordinator Ryan Nevard, providing the right competitive experiences is an important part of the academy pathway, allowing players to put their development into practice against a range of opposition.

He said: “The group approached the qualifying games really well and showed consistency across the four fixtures. We knew we needed to finish in the top four of the southern section, so every match was important.

“To finish third is a positive achievement and a reward for the work everyone has put in. The next stage will bring another level of challenge, exposing the players to different styles of football and giving them further opportunities to learn and improve.”

U16s head coach Andy Ottley has seen the group respond to a variety of tests throughout the qualifying process. At this stage of their development, learning to adapt, make decisions under pressure and work collectively are all important elements of preparing for the next steps in their respective careers.

“The players deserve credit for the way they approached the qualifying games,” he added. “They showed good quality and a willingness to compete, and finishing third in the southern section is a great reward for their efforts.

“The tournament in Spain will be a fantastic experience. Facing strong English academies alongside Spanish opposition will challenge the group in different ways, both on and off the pitch. We want the players to embrace the opportunity, compete with confidence and take as much as they can from the experience.”
