David Weir said Brentford’s pre-season win over Crystal Palace was “really positive”.
The Bees beat a strong side from the Premier League outfit 3-2 at Griffin Park on Saturday.
They went ahead early in the second half when Jonathan Douglas scored and doubled their lead through Andre Gray.
Palace scored twice in three minutes to level it up but Moses Odubajo scored the winner.
David, speaking to Bees Player: Match Day Live after the win, said Brentford would take confidence from the win.
He added that The Bees used substitutes that got up to speed straight away was also positive.
“I thought it was a really positive and, first of all, it was a good game of football,” said David.
“They played their first choice XI, it was a good standard and a good game.
“It was a positive exercise for us and we will take a lot of confidence from it.
“We won the game, which was important, but we played well, were open, attacking and showed we can play teams like that.
“We have always said it is a squad game, everyone has to contribute.
“The changes we made were seamless, which was important, and everyone got up to speed straight away.
“We made more substitutes than we can do normally but there was no drop off in tempo or quality.”
Brentford’s first goal came when a throw reached Douglas, he swerved his way in to the box before slotting home.
David said: “Jonathan is capable of playing in an offensive role.
“He has been the holding midfield player since we have been here but he has other attributes.
“He showed with his goal he has capabilities in the other box.
“The goal came from a thrown n as well, which was nice.
“We don’t want to restrict him, he has more to offer.
“We want to score goals and he has a part in that.”
Gray scored the second when he picked up a Stuart Dallas pass, turned and fired home from 20 yards.
It was his third goal in pre-season since arriving from Luton Town in the summer.
“We brought Andre here because we thought he could bridge the gap,” said David.
“We have gone up a level, Andre has jumped two or three but we don’t feel it is too far.
“We believe it and we hope he believes it.
“I am sure he will gain confidence from scoring a goal like that against a Premier League team.”
Odubajo’s winner came 15 minutes from the end.
Douglas spread the play and Odubajo controlled it on his chest on the right, he lifted it over Joel Ward and headed towards the box before cutting inside Scott Dann and slotting home.
David said Brentford responded positively after conceding two goals and emphasised that was the target of boss Mark Warburton.
“The negative part of the game was the goals we conceded and we have to get better but there are so many positives that I would rather focus on them,” said David.
“Mark preaches that if we are 2-0 up we look for three.
“Sometimes there will be set backs but we want to be positive.
“From 2-2 we went looking for another goal, we responded positively.
“Moses showed his quality, he opened up the pitch and had the composure.”
Brentford kick off their Sky Bet Championship season against Charlton Athletic on Saturday, August 9.
“We will spend this week preparing for the game,” said David.
“The players have to believe it is a challenge we are ready for.
“We have had a great pre-season and we will reinforce that this week.
“We believe in them and they have to know what they are capable of.
“We are excited about it.”
