Alex Pritchard described Brentford’s Sky Bet Championship victory at Norwich Coty as a “big win”.
Alex scored the winner from the penalty spot as Brentford won 2-1 at Carrow Road, their first ever league win at Norwich’s current home.
Jota had put The Bees in front in the first half but Norwich had unjustly levelled soon after.
Brentford dominated most of the match and when Andre Gray was brought down, Alex stepped up to convert the penalty.
The win put Brentford fourth in the Championship, six points clear of Norwich, who are seventh.
“This is a big win for us,” said Alex, speaking to Bees Player after the match.
“We came here with them three points behind us and with a better goal difference.
“If they had won today they would have gone above us.
“Everyone was together today, you could see that.
“We went ahead and could have been further ahead but they got a goal and we kept playing our football and we came out with a win.”
Brentford had three good chances before Jota’s goal and continued to dominate the match after Norwich equalised.
The Bees went ahead when Moses Odubajo robbed Steven Whittaker deep in his own half before running the length of the pitch and finding Gray, who set up Jota to slot home.
“In most games we have had a lot of chances,” said Alex.
“We haven’t put the ball in the back of the net as much as we would like but we are getting the three points most weeks.
“We have to keep working hard in training and take it in to games.
“We like to counter attack teams.
“We take chances in defence to try and attack.
“That is where the first goal came from today.
“We have done it all season.
“You have to take risks in this league.
“They paid off for us today.”
A deflected Nathan Redmond shot levelled it up but Brentford always looked the most likely winners.
A penalty was awarded when Carlos Cuellar and Michael Turner both tried to tackle Gray from behind.
Alex sent John Ruddy the wrong way from the spot to give The Bees a lead they did not relinquish.
“When the referee pointed to the spot all I was thinking about was putting it in the net,” said the goal scorer.
“I did.
“You have to outthink the goalkeeper.
“You try and fool the goalkeeper with your eyes and body shape, it puts them off.
“He went the wrong way and we have three points.”
Alex hailed Brentford’s defence and his midfield colleagues Jonathan Douglas and Toumani Diagouraga for their work.
He said The Bees dominated the game.
“We showed fantastic unity and we dominated on the ball,” said Alex.
“When they came at us they had height, strength and pace up top.
“The centre halves and full backs dealt with it well.
“Toums and Dougie sat in there and I tried to get back in to the deep position.
“Going forward we found pockets and were sharp.
“We dominated them today.”
The game at Carrow Road was one of only four Championship games played on Saturday with many teams in FA Cup action.
One of those teams was Middlesbrough, who won away at Manchester City.
They are Brentford’s next opponents and are one of only three teams now ahead of The Bees.
“This game was a big opportunity for both teams,” said Alex.
“They could catch us and we could go six points clear of a team that has just come down from the Premier League.
“We now go on to the next game.
“Middlesbrough at home won’t be easy but we will go again.”
