We ended our pre-season tour of Germany by drawing 2-2 with RC Strasbourg at Obere Wiesen Stadion.

Yoane Wissa and Keane Lewis-Potter scored a goal in each half as RCS had Ludovic Ajorque to thank for both of their strikes, KLP netting his first in red and white stripes.

The Bees started brightly and were clearly in the mood to attack. It took just 42 seconds for Wissa to register a shoot on target. It started with Mads Bech, playing a pass through a small gap to Vitaly Janelt, the German flicking it over the top for Wissa to cut in from the left and curl a shot narrowly wide of the right post.

Aaron Hickey took a knock with just a few minutes gone. He collided with a Strasbourg midfielder, face-to-face and split his lip. He had only just returned to the field of play when the French side opened the scoring.

A deep cross from the right by Adrien Thomasson found the towering Ajorque, who headed the ball beyond David Raya at the far post. The six-foot-six forward has been RCS’s top scorer for the past three seasons running in Ligue 1, it’s no surprise he was clinical from that range.

An exceedingly hot day took the energy from the play but Brentford were still dominant in possession.

Wissa got us back in the game after 37 minutes. Another Janelt flick found Wissa through on goal, after a very good touch off his head, and the DR Congo international picked his spot before blasting into the net.

It could have been a complete turnaround when Ivan Toney then hit the bar just before the interval. A sweeping team move from back to front saw Janelt pull off a sharp turn in the box before feeding Toney running in. He took his time, sitting the keeper down before striking fiercely against the woodwork.

After the break

More of the same from both teams. Strasbourg made more early changes and found a little bit of momentum as the half went on. With an hour gone, they retook the lead.

A corner kick found its way to the edge of the box where sub Thomas Delaine was waiting to chip the ball back into the danger zone. Ajorque once again rose first and sent a looping header over the despairing Raya and into the net at the far post.

After that, Thomas Frank made a full swap of his squad and they almost got a goal back immediately.

A cross from the right by Saman Ghoddos found . The striker had his shot saved and then Ryan Trevitt had a follow-up cleared on the goal line by defender Lucas Perrin.

With ten minutes to go, there was a strong suspicion that RC’s sub keeper Eiji Kawashima – the highly experienced Japanese international who played for them at the 2002 World Cup – had collected a ball outside of his penalty area. Despite protests from the forwards, the referee waved them on.

He certainly showed his prowess moments later, making a fine stop from Dervisoglu one-on-one. The ball across the box had found the Turkish forward running on to it but his finish was tipped inches wide by the veteran goalie.

Kawashima’s luck ran out with a few minutes to go. Dervisoglu played an enticing pass between the defenders, for Lewis-Potter to run on to. The former Hull man had his first effort saved but the bounce favoured him and he scooped in the rebound.
