Brentford Women B progressed to the third round of the JGMT Cup with a 5-2 win over Comets at Bedfont Sports Club on Sunday.
It wasn’t smooth sailing for the Bees as they went down 2-0 inside the opening 30 minutes. Leah Robertson and Liberty Morrice-Bartlett scored to equalise for Brentford before half-time, before Kirsty Matthews gave the west Londoners the lead after the break. Morrice-Bartlett scored her second and Elsa Lesnard netted soon after to ensure an impressive victory.
Coming up against tier-six opposition, Tommy Ryan-Maynard’s side faced a tough challenge in wet and windy conditions at Bedfont.
The visitors started strongly and opened their account on 23 minutes. A loose Brentford pass in their own half was intercepted and the ball was quickly moved to Rosalind Duignan-Pearson in the middle of the box, the forward lobbing Bees goalkeeper Christie Tucker with a neat finish.
Six minutes later the Comets’ lead was doubled. Strong build-up play down the left side saw the visitors break through into a counter-attack, the ball eventually crossed to McKenna Doyle who finished well from close range.
The Bees didn’t have to wait long to cut the deficit in half as Robertson found the back of the net on 36 minutes.
Ava Slade made a strong run down the right side before crossing the ball to a dangerous area in the box, Robertson meeting the ball on the half-volley and lobbing the Comets goalkeeper with her first touch to score her first goal of the season.
Riding a wave of momentum, the west Londoners had their second three minutes later through Morrice-Bartlett. Taking possession a long way from the box, the midfielder took a touch to her left before launching a long-range strike, the ball bouncing off the outstretched hands of the Comets goalkeeper and into the back of the net.
Out of the break Ryan-Maynard’s side wasted little time in going ahead as Matthews struck for her ninth goal of the season on 51 minutes. An attempt to clear their own box saw Comets play the ball straight to the Brentford no.15, who immediately sent the ball into the bottom-right corner to make it 3-2.
Two minutes later the Bees’ lead was doubled as Morrice-Bartlett scored her brace. Running onto a perfectly placed ball from Rebekah Edwards, the midfielder launched another long-range strike into the bottom-left corner.
Late in the contest with a win secured, the west Londoners added a fifth goal to secure a five-star performance. After back-to-back shots were kept out of the back of the net, Lesnard made no mistake from close range for her first goal of the season.
Brentford return to Capital Cup action this weekend as they travel to Dulwich Sports Ground to face Kenningwell United.
