Snapped up on Deadline Day to add quality and competition to Brentford's attacking line-up, new loanee Reiss Nelson has shown flashes of elite potential both at home and abroad - and he will now look to take his game to the next level in TW8.

The Gunners academy graduate has gained valuable experience in the Premier League, as well as in the Bundesliga and Eredivisie, and the 25-year-old has penned a loan deal with the Bees after a promising stint with Fulham last term was cut short by injury.

Nelson has been recruited to bolster a new-look Brentford forward line that will likely see him compete with Dango Ouattara and Kevin Schade in wide positions - and his career numbers to date suggest he will provide head coach Keith Andrews with fresh and exciting qualities.

His Premier League debut for the Gunners came as an 18-year-old, when he came on during a 4-1 win over Crystal Palace in January 2018, but it was during his subsequent loan spell in the Bundesliga in 2018/19 that the London-born winger started to attract headlines.

On a season-long loan at Hoffenheim, Nelson wasted no time in showcasing his talents and his keen eye for goal, as the then England youth international bagged seven goals in 23 Bundesliga appearances.

His goal-scoring numbers were particularly impressive in relation to his game time - Borussia Dortmund's Paco Alcácer was the only player with a better minutes-per-goal ratio than Nelson (90 mpg) among players to play 20+ games in the German top tier that season.

Sharp on the turn and smart in his distribution, Nelson returned to Arsenal buoyed by his Bundesliga breakthrough, but Covid-19 and a series of injuries (not to mention the emergence of a certain Bukayo Saka) conspired to rob him of rhythm and opportunities with the Gunners.

Another loan on the continent beckoned, and Nelson again cut the mustard in one of Europe's top leagues during a stint at Feyenoord back in 2021/22 under current Liverpool head coach Arne Slot.

That season, Nelson clocked up double figures for goal involvements (four goals and six assists) across all competitions for the Dutch side and ranked well inside the Eredivisie's top 50 performers in terms of successful dribbles per 90, with an impressive 2.8 (to give this context, Mikkel Damsgaard averaged 1.5 successful dribbles last term for the Bees).

Nelson returned to the Emirates in 2022/23, scoring three goals and supplying three assists across all competitions, but limited game time during that campaign and its successor saw him seal his loan move to Fulham last summer.

A fast start at Craven Cottage saw Nelson quickly become a regular for Marco Silva's men, only for the aforementioned hamstring strain to prematurely end his season.

Although the sample size from his Fulham loan was limited, the data suggests Nelson can offer Brentford both control and penetration.

His 91.4 per cent pass completion rate placed him among Silva’s most efficient ball retainers, and that efficiency has been a hallmark of his career, all the more impressive given the natural risk in a winger’s game.

A look at Nelson's Premier League appearance record to date tells a clear story; only 15 of his 61 games in the English top tier have come as a starter. His challenge now is to stay fit, focused, and establish himself as a key man for the Bees.

Nelson’s intelligence, technical quality and eye for goal have been recurring themes throughout his career - something he'll be looking to continue in Brentford colours.
