Brentford Under-18s prevailed 7-5 over Huddersfield Town Under-18s in a rollercoaster Professional Development League clash at Wheatsheaf Park on Saturday.

Under-16 striker Jai Nwosu starred with four goals, while Jacob Hanson, Coran Madden and Nathaniel Ogungbemi each netted in the young Bees’ fourth league win in a row.

In sunny conditions in west London Gary McDermott’s side started promisingly and dominated possession early in the contest.

The Bees best early chance came eight minutes into the clash. Ogungbemi found captain Hanson through the middle of the pitch and after going past one defender, laid it off to Yerime Ouattara down the right side of the box, however his shot was saved by Charlie Wrigglesworth in goal for Huddersfield.

Despite the early dominance from the hosts it was the young Terriers who scored first. A loose Brentford pass in their own half was pounced on by Harrison Wilson, the midfielder neatly slotting the ball past Bees goalkeeper Felix Lyon for the opener.

Despite going down the west Londoners continued to press. On 16 minutes trialist B played a neat ball from the left side to Nwosu in the box, the striker holding off his defender as he tried to turn and shoot, however the effort was blocked.

He went one better five minutes later to equalise for Brentford. A brilliant Hanson backheel freed up Ouattara down the right side who crossed to a dangerous area in the box, Nwosu meeting the ball at the near post and slamming it home.

Nwosu was proving a handful and almost had a second soon after as he was played through the backline down the right side of the box, but his shot raced across the face of goal.

The momentum was short lived for the Bees, however, as Huddersfield re-took the lead two minutes later. Mohamed Fikri forced his way into the box down the right side and played a neat cross to Patrick Key who made no mistake from close range.

McDermott’s side were not deterred, however, and took momentum into the break thanks to Nwosu. Beau Redknapp’s free-kick from long range smashed into the bar but remained in play, Nwosu reacting quickest to head it home to make it 2-2.

The momentum carried through to the second half as the Bees took the lead inside the opening five minutes. Ogungbemi was played through down the left side of the box by trialist B before cutting the ball back, Hanson running onto the ball and superbly finishing with his first touch.

As it had done for the first 55 minutes, the rollercoaster of momentum continued as the hour mark approached. On 59 minutes Huddersfield equalised through Key as he tapped home Milkyas Mebrahtu’s cut-back from the right side.

Less than a minute later Mebrahtu won the ball back in Brentford’s half and moved straight into the counterattack, before launching the ball goalward, lobbing Lyon and giving the visitors back the lead.

As the game steadied again Archie Trimboli looked to have an impact off the bench. His cross from the right side found Ogungbemi in the box, however his header back towards the right corner went wide of the right post.

With 20 minutes to play Madden was substituted on and he had an immediate impact in his return from injury. Receiving the ball down the left side he cut back inside and looked to cross to Nwosu, however the ball missed his head but beat Wrigglesworth into the far corner to equalise for Brentford.

Three minutes later the Bees regained the lead. Making his way deep into Huddersfield’s box, Redknapp cut the ball back to Ogungbemi who tapped it home for the west Londoners’ fifth.

With five minutes to play Brentford put the game out of reach as Nwosu secured his hat-trick. Redknapp’s corner from the left side hit a dangerous area in the box, Nwosu able to force it over the line despite being swarmed by Huddersfield defenders.

In added time the visitors pulled one back through a Spencer Worthington free-kick, however the Bees responded as Nwosu slotted home a penalty after Micaiah Fanoiki was taken down inside the box.

The west Londoners return to action next Saturday as they travel to face Bournemouth in PDL action.
