Wissa in Congo DR squad

Call-up for qualification matches for Bees attacker

23 May 2022

Yoane Wissa has been called in to the Democratic Republic of Congo squad for two vital matches. Congo DR will start their qualification campaign for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations at the start of June. They have two qualification games and Wissa is in the group selected for the matches.

Congo DR will start their campaign at home to Gabon on Saturday 4 June. They then face Sudan away from home on Tuesday 7 June. They are in qualification Group I with Mauritania as the fourth team. They will play each side home and away and the top two will reach the tournament, to be held in Côte d’Ivoire in the summer of 2023.

Wissa will link up with his national team mates later this week to start preparations for the games. He will be looking to add to the four caps he has earned for his country. Two of those caps were earned earlier this year.

Wissa was first called up by Congo DR in October 2020. He made his debut against Burkina Faso and scored on his second appearance in a friendly against Morocco. His last two appearances were also in matches against Morocco, which means he has earned three of his four caps against the same country.

Those matches were in a two-legged Play-Off for a place in the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Unfortunately for Wissa and Congo DR, Morocco won the tie. Wissa played in both games and scored a goal, but it was not enough. He has four caps and two goals for Congo DR so far.
