The B Team’s final match of the season ended in defeat to Jong PSV on Tuesday night. The Dutch youth side won 2-0 at The Cherry Red Records Stadium in Southwest London, August Priske Flyger scoring both.

Neil MacFarlane’s side survived an early scare in the first 60 seconds when goalkeeper Matt Cox put the ball down but was tackled by Nigel Thomas. The winger clipped a strike over the keeper but Jude Russell was in behind to clear off the line.

The visitors took the lead after nine minutes. Neat play between Thomas and Mo Nassoh on the right wing allowed the latter to cross into the middle. Flyger got in ahead of his marker and managed to sweep the ball beyond Cox in the Bees goal.

After 20 minutes, Flyger had a chance to double the lead. Dom Jefferies slid in slightly late on Simon Colyn, referee Matthew Downey awarding a free-kick in favour of the Canadian midfielder. Flyger struck an effort over the wall but north of the crossbar.

At the other end, Deji Sotona was upended by Livano Comenencia in a very similar position outside the other penalty box. It was Gilbert that struck this one, powerfully but against the top of the wall and away from danger.

The Republic of Ireland Under-21 got a second chance to strike one at goal from closer range a few minutes later. Sotona again the spark, his ball into Gilbert was hit at goal but Tyrick Bodak was equal to it, palming it away.

Brentford’s Trialist could have levelled things as Jaakko Oksanen swung in a corner that reached the far post. The centre-back nodded it towards goal but Bodak was able to catch it and hold on under pressure.

PSV’s second came moments before the half-time break. Cheick Touré played a cutting pass through the back line and Flyger raced through one-on-one with Cox. The 18-year-old Dane smashed the finish over the keeper and in off the bar.

The second half got off to a cagey start. Sub goalkeeper Niek Schiks only had a deep corner to punch away from goal as chances became sparse at the home of The Dons.

After an hour, Sotona came closest to getting a goal back. Set behind by Gilbert, the winger drove into space but couldn’t get the ball out of his feet when it came to striking it at the target. Instead, it fizzed over the crossbar.

PSV sub Chahid el Allachi could have put his team even further in the lead but his shot from the edge of the box dropped agonisingly wide of the post.

Jefferies went into the book for a late foul after 77 minutes and was then almost on the scoresheet at the other end. Latching onto a blocked clearance in the box, he drilled a shot narrowly wide of the post with Schiks rooted to the spot.

With just five minutes to go, one of the Trialists for the B squad raced clear towards goal. His effort beat the keeper but cannoned off the bar and away from the box.

The final whistle signalled a hard-fought defeat for MacFarlane’s side and brought the curtain down on the 2021-22 campaign.
