World Cup Qualifying dream ends for Frank Onyeka and Yoane Wissa

The final night of CAF Qualifying sees our pair bow out

30 March 2022

There was final night heartbreak for Yoane Wissa and Frank Onyeka as both DR Congo and Nigeria fell at the final hurdle of CAF 2022 World Cup Qualifying.

Both ties went into their respective second-legs level but, with a place in Qatar just 90 minutes away, the dream ended for our Brentford pair.

It was particularly tough for Nigeria as they went out on the away goals rule to neighbours Ghana following a 1-1 draw in Abuja. Frank played the opening 45 minutes to earn his seventh cap for his nation. Following a goalless draw in the first leg on Friday, Ghana grabbed the vital away goal through Arsenal’s Thomas Partey after ten minutes. Watford’s William Troost-Ekong levelled the tie up from the spot midway through the first-half but with no more goals it was Ghana who were celebrating at full-time.

Wissa and DR Congo were on the end of a 4-1 defeat to Morocco in Casablanca. Azzedine Ounahi netted twice, either side of a Tarik Tissuoadali effort, to effectively wrap the tie up in the opening 54 minutes. Achraf Hakimi added a fourth before a late Ben Malongo consolation for DR Congo. Wissa, who scored Congo’s goal in their 1-1 first leg draw, played 77 minutes to earn his fourth international cap. He also has two goals for his nation.

Both players will now return to TW8 ahead of Saturday’s visit to Chelsea.
