The young Bees won the game with a first half goal from Nathan Young-Coombes, who notched his 28th of the season after some tenacious attacking play.

The B team controlled much of the game throughout and started the game confident in possession with some promising moments which threatened the Palace goal. On eight minutes Dom Jefferies crossed from the right and found Young-Coombes but the youngster’s effort was blocked for a corner as the side searched for an early opener. Ryan Trevitt also broke forward just before the 20-minute mark and he managed find Young-Coombes, who then fed it to Deji Sotona but the pass was just ahead of the youngster, who would have had a chance at goal.

An important tackle from Ben Hockenhull on 26 minutes ensured John Kymani-Gordon’s effort didn’t threaten Ben Winterbottom’s goal as he attempted a shot at the near post down the left. The home side then had a good chance from a corner but the ball was headed wide amongst a crowd of bodies.

Young-Coombes then saw a free-kick from the edge of the box go straight at the Palace keeper before Jude Russell, who joined The Bees last summer after departing Palace, did fantastically down the right to stand the ball up to the far post but Sotona was unable to keep his header on target.

Seven minutes before the break the opener came through Young-Coombes. With the ball at the keeper’s feet, the youngster charged him down and managed to win back possession before composing himself and slotting home into the far corner.

It could then have been two on the cusp of half-time when Trevitt saw his powerful drive from the edge of the box well saved by the Palace shot stopper.

The second half began with The Bees looking to further their advantage as Trevitt was once again involved when Jefferies pulled the ball back from the right, and despite it bouncing, the midfielder composed himself well before striking powerfully but it edged just over.

Jaakko Oksanen was next to try his luck as he hit a sho whicht went over and Sotona also shot from the edge of the box. Unfortunately he slipped at the final moment as the ball flashed wide of goal but it was nonetheless a dangerous attempt.

Palace could have levelled on 56 minutes when one of the midfielders did well to win the ball back from The Bees at the near post before crossing low but Kymani-Gordon was unable to convert at the far post as the ball flashed across goal.

A flicked effort at the far post from Tristan Crama could well have put Brentford further ahead but for a close range save from the keeper as he pushed the ball round the post. On 60 minutes First Team central defender Julian Jeanvier stepped up his return from injury as he played the final 30 minutes as he helped the side see out the game.

More chances fell when Young-Coombes fired over at the near post before another chance fell for Trevitt on 89 minutes but his curled effort flashed just over.
