Wissa nets as DR Congo draw in First Leg of World Cup Play-Off

Friday's international action for our Bees

26 March 2022

Yoane Wissa joined our international goalscorers list last night as he netted in DR Congo’s 1-1 draw at home to Morocco in CAF 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifying. The goal gives Congo a real shot of reaching this winter’s finals in Qatar as they head into Tuesday’s Play-Off second leg in Casablanca all square.

The Bees attacker gave Congo an early lead at the Stade des Martyrs de la Pentecôte in Kinshasa, his shot from range taking a nick off a defender and finding the back of the net. The Leopards held that advantage for more than an hour until Tarik Tissoudali levelled with 14 minutes to play. Full-back Ngonda Muzinga picked up a second booking late on for the home side and will miss Tuesday’s decisive clash.

25-year-old Wissa, who has seven goals in 26 outings for Brentford this season, now has two goals in three international games.

Also in CAF qualifying, Frank Onyeka played the final half-hour of Nigeria’s goalless draw against Ghana in Kumasi. The game between the two West-African rivals was an end-to-end affair despite neither side really managing to test the opposition keeper.

The stalemate gives the Super Eagles the advantage heading back to Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja on Tuesday night.

Frank now has six caps for his nation since making his debut in October 2020. The 24-year-old has made 24 appearances this season since joining from FC Midtjylland, 20 of those coming in the Premier League.

Elsewhere, Kristoffer Ajer was an unused substitute for Norway’s 2-0 victory over Slovakia in an international friendly. Erling Haaland and Martin Ødegaard struck in the final 13 minutes as Norway extended their run to just one defeat in nine. Norway have another friendly on Tuesday night in Oslo against Armenia.
