International Review: A First Nations League win for Spain on Thursday

The latest international review

10 June 2022

David Raya’s Spain picked up their first win of their Nations League campaign as they beat Switzerland 1-0 away from home on Thursday.

David was an unused substitute in the victory as Pablo Sarabia got the game’s only goal with his left foot from close range on 13 minutes. Spain dominated possession with 65% but both sides were level on seven shots each, though Spain were on target three times and Switzerland came up with one shot on target. They are now second in their Nations League group on five points from three matches and they face Czech Republic at home on Sunday.

Looking to Africa, Frank Onyeka was an unused substitute in Nigeria’s 2-1 win over Sierra Leone in qualifying for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations at home. It was actually the away side who took the lead as Jonathan Morsay scored after 11 minutes to make it 1-0. Nigeria were behind for just five minutes as Alex Iwobi found the net. The turnaround was complete when Victor Osimhen put Nigeria in front four minutes before half-time as they claimed the win. The win was the side’s opening match in qualifying and they sit second in the group with Guinea-Bissau top on goal difference. Next up for Nigeria is São Tomé and Príncipe on Monday.

As for Julian Jeanvier, his Guinea side were also in action yesterday in Africa Cup of Nations qualifying as they beat Malawi 1-0. The only goal of the game didn’t come until second half stoppage time as Naby Keïta grabbed the winner. Julian wasn’t involved for the side on the day. Guinea now sit third in Group D after two matches.
