Brentford FC Women’s First Team made it back-to-back 2-1 victories with an important result over Walton Casuals in the league. Ellen Wardlaw helped herself to a brace in what was an impressive individual display, but it was certainly a team effort that got The Bees over the line and handed them all three points.

Head Coach Karleigh Osborne was pleased with all aspects of his side’s performance and believes there were moments of real quality as well as great character on show.

Karleigh said: “I think we showed both sides to our game today. We showed what we can do on the ball and the nice bits of play we can produce. On the other hand, in the last 20 minutes we had to dig deep and fight for it. I’m proud of my players today, I think it was a really complete performance.”

There was a reshuffle in formations for Brentford. Due to left back Chloe Webb missing through injury they switched to a 3-5-2 instead of their normal 4-3-3, despite the change they hit the ground running and broke the deadlock in the 12th minute.

It was created by brilliant hold up play from Georgia Harris who brought down a long ball from Amber Langston-Lloyd. Harris then swivelled and pinged a diagonal ball to Wardlaw down the right. The winger was not fazed by the onrushing keeper and calmly slotted the ball underneath her; it was deadly from the away side who went from back to front in just three passes.

On the hour mark Brentford doubled their lead and deservedly so. They found themselves free down the left and the ball was cut back to Wardlaw. The winger calmly came inside past one defender and fired her shot straight into the top right, giving the keeper absolutely no chance.

With about 15 minutes left to play Walton managed to drag a goal back and set up an interesting ending. The ball was whipped in from the right to the back post and looked like a certain goal, but Emily Boycott in the Brentford goal did wonderfully to block from close range. Unfortunately, The Bees failed to clear properly and from long range Walton’s Emily Bernard tried her luck and the ball sailed into the net, making it 2-1.

Despite a nervy last 15 minutes Brentford managed to see the game out and come away with all three points.
