Match Report and Match Highlights: Maidenhead United 1 Brentford B 5

Young Bees claim win at York Road

14 January 2022

Brentford B picked up a victory in their first match of 2022 as they beat National League side Maidenhead United 5-1 at York Road.

The goals came courtesy of a Nathan Young-Coombes hat-trick whilst Jude Russell also notched two on the day.

Neil MacFarlane had a strong B Team squad to choose from with the likes of Alex Gilbert coming straight back into the side following the end of his loan with Swindon whilst Daniel Oyegoke played to the right of a back four which included Russell, Tristan Crama and Lewis Gordon. Myles Peart-Harris also earned minutes while Paris Maghoma, who has just recently signed a new contract, got 30 minutes as he stepped up his return from injury.

The opening stages were relatively even with the B Team’s first sight of goal coming on nine minutes as Gordon’s cross from the left found Young-Coombes before the ball found its way to Ryan Trevitt but his effort was well blocked for a corner.

Maidenhead then threatened down the right and a cross found the head of Dylan Asonganyi but his effort was claimed by Ben Winterbottom who was alert to rise well. On 18 minutes the B Team could have been ahead when they forced a smart save out of Dan Gyollai. Wonderful play from right to left saw Peart-Harris find Gordon and his cross was pinpoint for Young-Coombes but his header was saved fantastically as the United shot stopper dived to his right to push the ball behind.

Winterbottom came out on top against Asonganyi once again shortly before the 20-minute mark when the forward struck low from the edge of the box but the keeper got down low to push the ball away from danger.

The opener then came on 22 minutes when Young-Coombes grabbed his first. Wonderful footwork from Peart-Harris saw him turn and play in Max Haygarth who drove into the area before playing the ball across goal for the B Team striker to knock home from close range.

It got even better for The Bees just four minutes later when they were awarded a penalty after tenacious running from Trevitt paid off as he was fouled by Gyollai and the referee pointed to the spot. Young-Coombes then stepped up to fire his effort home to the right of the goal and make it 2-0.

His hat-trick then came on 31 minutes when a ball back to the youngster saw him hold his run before finishing low into the bottom left-hand corner as he claimed his 20th goal of the season across B Team and Brentford XI fixtures.

The Bees were running riot in a sensational period and it was almost four just five minutes later when Haygarth was played in down the right. He tricked onto his dangerous left foot but could only curl his effort just wide of goal.

On 39 minutes Maidenhead pulled a goal back when a ball from the right went behind the Brentford back line and Reece Smith slotted under Winterbottom to reduce the deficit.

Jude Russell got his first goal for the Club in stoppage time in the first half as he got on the end of a corner. He headed goalwards against the post and the ball came back to him before he tapped into the net at the second attempt.

The second half continued in similar form as The Bees started brightly. It was almost a fourth for Young-Coombes on 53 minutes when he got on the end of an Oyegoke cross but his first time effort edged just over the bar.

Gilbert’s set piece deliveries caused havoc as Tristan Crama headed over soon after and the fifth and final goal arrived shortly before the hour. A Gilbert corner was met by Russell and he headed home from the centre of the box to further Brentford’s advantage.

Going into the last 15 minutes, a much changed Bees side following a number of substitutes, almost got a sixth goal when Gilbert played a fantastic ball through to one of the Trialist strikers, and despite finding the net, the goal was ruled out for offside.
