Match Report and Match Highlights: Brentford B 1 Breiðablik 2

Young Bees narrowly beaten in Atlantic Cup

6 February 2022

Brentford B slipped to a narrow 2-1 defeat in their opening match of the Atlantic Cup in Portugal against Breiðablik.

A second half strike from Tristan Crama wasn’t enough to get the side back level in terms of the score line, but the young Bees created a host of chances but for an inspired goalkeeping performance at times.

It was a fast start from The Bees, who lined up with Ryan Trevitt through the middle, whilst Dom Jefferies operated from the right of a forward three. There was high pressing and a real desire under the lights in the Algarve in a positive first 25 minutes or so.

Trevitt had a chance just two minutes in when Jefferies won the ball back before Paris Maghoma played the ball inside and Trevitt’s effort was well saved.

A few minutes later Alex Gilbert delivered a wonderful free-kick from a wide position and it found Crama who was running across the near post. He was unable to bring the ball under his spell as the keeper collected.

Following that, the opponents managed to wrestle back a bit of control in the game and they had a good chance when Gisli Eyjolfsson cut into the box and shot just over Matt Cox’s goal.

Viktor Karl Einarsson then shot over from distance before a good chance fell on 27 minutes for Gisli Eyjolfsson as he went through on goal but could only curl his effort against the post. A fantastic block from Jaakko Oksanen then denied a follow-up attempt as The Bees were let off.

The Icelandic side went ahead just a few minutes later though when Damir Muminovic was alert following a corner and he was quick to react as he stabbed an effort home inside the near post.

A low free-kick which was well saved by Matt Cox in the Brentford goal kept the score at 1-0 on 54 minutes as Hoskuldur Gunnlaugsson was denied. That preceded a glorious chance for Brentford to level things just before the hour as Lewis Gordon drove down the left-hand side before he pulled the ball back into the path of Trevitt, but his low shot squirmed just past the post as Breidablik remained ahead.

It was 2-0 on 66 minutes when Kristin Steindorsson fired in at the near post. A lofted ball into box, saw the Breiðablik man work some space and fire home high into the net.

In the final 20 minutes it was mainly Brentford, first when a teasing Max Haygarth deep cross from the right-hand side almost found the run of Gilbert but he was unable to bring the ball under his spell as it flashed past him.

The Bees pulled a goal back with 13 minutes to play as a corner to the far post was attacked by Ben Hockenhull, who headed low, before the ball rebounded off of a defender into the path of Crama who made no mistake as he fired home to make it 2-1.

Haygarth was next to try his luck when a brilliant individual run saw him drive across goal from the right before his left footed shot flashed wide of goal. Deji Sotona, who made his first appearance in a Brentford shirt from the bench, made an impact as he drove at goal and broke into the box before teeing up Trevitt, whose shot was blocked, and Myles Peart-Harris saw his attempt saved well.
