B Team reach second Cup Final of the season

7 April 2022

Brentford B progressed to their second Cup Final of the 2021/22 season as they beat Barking 4-0 away from home in the Semi-Final of the London Senior Cup.

The young Bees have already secured themselves a place in the Final of the Middlesex Senior Challenge Cup against Barnet, and they will now take on Hendon later this month in this competition. Goals from Alex Gilbert, Tristan Crama and Hans Mpongo, as well as a Barking own goal, did the damage for the side in what was dominant display.

With the First Team calling upon a handful of young players for their fixture with Leyton Orient earlier in the day, there was a change in personnel from the side's last match with Arsenal with Mpongo leading the line in place of Nathan Young-Coombes. The likes of Ryan Trevitt and Deji Sotona also featured in the match earlier in the day so missed the Semi-Final.

Mayesbrook Park Stadium was the venue as Brentford started on the front foot with Dom Jefferies crossing low towards Gilbert inside two minutes, but for a vital Barking clearance for a corner. On 13 minutes Neil MacFarlane's side probably should have taken the lead when a ball forward from Crama found Lewis Gordon, who was deployed at right back from the start, and he then fed Jefferies who was causing a nuisance in that right-hand channel. The Welshman delivered a wicked cross towards Mpongo who was a few yards out but he was unable to connect as the ball flashed across goal.

Crama then headed wide a few moments later and Mpongo's second attempt saw his effort well saved from the edge of the box. It took until the 28th minute for the deadlock to be broken and it came in style as Crama burst forwards and crossed towards the far post and the onrushing Gilbert made no mistake as he nodded home to make it 1-0.

A few moments later Jefferies combined well with Gordon before lashing an effort into the side netting as the side looked to double their advantage. It was 2-0 on 38 minutes and it came through a Barking own goal. Jefferies once again pulled away to the right and put a low cross in which Kenedi Dariri could only turn into his net.

A late chance in the half did fall Barking's way, though, as Alessandro Wisdom struck powerfully from the edge of the box which forced Ben Winterbottom to make a save.

The second period continued much the same way as The Bees controlled things as they looked to dictate the pace of the game. Midfielder Roy Syla was particularly key for the side as he was a constant threat on the ball as he continued to get the side moving forward from deep.

On 57 minutes it became 3-0 when Crama got his goal at the far post. Having proved a very effective asset from set pieces this season, the young Frenchman got on the end of a Gilbert corner which outwitted the defenders and left Crama with a chance to knock the ball home from close range.

With Brentford in full control they continued to dominate in terms of chances. Gilbert went close to getting his second of the evening with his shot from the edge of the box but for the keeper's save. The determined Mpongo continued to chase down his opponents and he went close again when a burst forward from Jefferies saw him play in his teammate, but for the onrushing keeper who saved from close range.

Just a couple of minutes later Mpongo did get his goal and it was perhaps the best of the night. Slick football in midfield saw Brentford retain possession before it was switched out to Wraynel Hercules on the right-hand side. His powerful drive saw him cross low into the path of Mpongo who couldn't miss as he slotted home to confirm the 4-0 win and a match with Hendon in the Final. We will provide full details on the Final in due course.
