Bees cruise to victory over Watford Ladies

Rebekah Edwards and Axelle Courlander score in controlled display

29 September 2021

Brentford FC Women’s First Team took centre stage this weekend due to The B Team’s game being cancelled and certainly did not disappoint.

They claimed back-to-back victories for the first time this season after comfortably defeating Watford Ladies Development 3-1.

Left winger Rebekah Edwards shone throughout the match and bagged herself a brace, whilst forward Axelle Courlander grabbed the other goal in an impressive performance from The Bees.

With Brentford scoring nine goals in two games, Head Coach Karleigh Osborne believes the team are really beginning to connect as an attacking force and said: “It’s definitely starting to click in terms of our attacking players and the chances that we’re creating and taking, so I’m pleased with that. If I’m being harsh, we could have scored a few more today, but we put three away so I can’t complain about that."

The opening goal came around 35 minutes in and was the result of a corner. Sophie Troth pinged the ball in and the opposing keeper attempted to claim, but ended up in no man’s land, Courlander rose the highest and headed into a vacated net.

Brentford had most of the possession and deservedly went into the break with a 1-0 edge.

Troth was also involved in The Bees doubling their lead 20 minutes into the second half. This time the number 10 saw her shot parried by Watford’s keeper after latching onto a dangerous low cross from the right-hand side; Edwards was in the right place at the right time to slam home the rebound.

Shortly after that, the home side made it 3-0, all but ending the game as a contest. It was great work down the left as fullback Chloe Webb made a fantastic overlapping run before delivering a quality ball to the back post. Edwards found herself all alone and calmly headed the ball into the bottom right-hand corner.

Edwards was then a whisker away from claiming her hat-trick after meeting the ball perfectly from a corner, however the winger’s powerful volley cannoned back off the crossbar.

With five minutes to go, Watford snatched a consolation goal, yet there was some controversy surrounding it. Brentford believed they had cleared the ball off the line after a headed effort came in from a Watford corner. Despite heavy Brentford protests, the goal was awarded. This was a slight blemish on an otherwise perfect afternoon for The Bees.

Their next test is in The Vitality Women's FA Cup when they face Abingdon United in the Second Qualifying Round at Bedfont Sports Ground. That's next Sunday, 3rd October, in West London.
