Oldham beat Accrington Stanley to reach the Third Round. The Greater Manchester side won a penalty shoot-out after the tie had finished 0-0. They had previously beaten Tranmere Rovers in the First Round, also on penalties after a 2-2 draw. Their League Two form has been less promising, last weekend’s 2-1 win over Sutton United saw them register their first points after four straight defeats to begin the campaign.

The teams have not met since the 2013/14 season. Brentford won promotion from League One that season and took four points from Oldham, winning at Griffin Park and drawing the return fixture. The Bees completed home and away doubles over Oldham in the 2011/12 and 2012/13 seasons. Oldham have not scored against or beaten Brentford in six meetings, stretching back to 2011.

Brentford will be looking to repeat the success of last year. The Bees beat four Premier League sides on their way to the Semi-Final. It was the first time Brentford had ever reached the last four of a major competition. It was also only the third time ever, after the 1982/83 and 2010/11 seasons, that Brentford had got past the Third Round.

Brentford's run came to an end against Tottenham Hotspur; The Bees having beaten Southampton, West Brom, Fulham and Newcastle United to reach that stage. Tottenham then lost to Manchester City in the Final in April.
