Denmark remain perfect in World Cup Qualifying

Wednesday's action for our internationals

2 September 2021

A pair of early goals from Daniel Wass and Joakim Maehle last night earned Christian Nørgaard and Denmark their fourth straight win in Qualifying to leave them five points clear at the top of Group F.

The two goals against Scotland were separated by just 91 seconds with Wass ghosting in to head home the opener before Maehle's neat finish doubled their advantage at Parken. After that the result never looked in doubt with Christian coming off the bench for the final five minutes to help see out the game. The appearance was Christian’s tenth for his country, all of which have come in the past year. Mathias Jensen was not involved in the matchday squad.

Denmark's next Qualifying engagement is in Torshavn on Saturday against Faroe Islands, kick-off 7.45pm.

Elsewhere last night, Marcus Forss earned his eighth cap for Finland, playing 73 minutes of their goalless friendly draw at home to Wales. The 22-year-old thought he had opened the scoring after just five minutes but was adjudged to have committed a foul in the build-up. Wales had a golden chance midway through the first half but Harry Wilson’s weak spot kick was saved by Carljohan Eriksson. Both sides had chances after the break but neither could find a way through at the Olympic Stadium.

Finland are back in action on Saturday, kick-off 2pm UK time, hosting Kazakhstan in a World Cup Qualifier in Helsinki.

Kristoffer Ajer stayed on the bench as Norway and Netherlands played out a 1-1 Qualifying draw in Oslo. Erling Haaland put Norway ahead after 20 minutes but Davy Klaassen levelled things before the break. It is as you were at the head of Group G with the top four sides, including Norway, separated by just a point. On Saturday, Kristoffer and his teammates head to Riga for a qualifier against Latvia. The defender, who joined The Bees  from Celtic in July, has played 23 times for his nation since making his debut as a 19-year-old.
