Halil Dervişoğlu rejoins Galatasaray on season-long loan

Attacker to spend season in Turkey

1 September 2021

Halil Dervişoğlu has re-joined Turkish Süper Lig side Galatasaray Spor Kulübü, better known as Galatasaray SK, on loan until the end of the season. The 21-year-old spent the second half of last season in Istanbul and completed his return earlier today, Wednesday 1 September, subject to international clearance.

Co-Director of Football, Phil Giles, said: “Halil had a good period on loan last season, and when Galatasaray expressed an interest to take him back for this season it seemed like a logical progression for Halil to continue to play and develop. We have a strong belief that Halil’s skill set can make him a top player in future, so we will watch his performances with interest and look forward to his return.”

Halil joined The Bees from Sparta Rotterdam at the start of 2020 and made his debut in an Emirates FA Cup Third Round victory over Stoke City four days later. His Sky Bet Championship debut came the following month at Hull City, the third of seven appearances he would make before the end of the campaign.

Last season began with the Turkish international featuring against Southampton in the EFL Cup Second Round before joining FC Twente on loan until January. He made ten appearances in total in Holland, returning to West London in the New Year. That month he netted his maiden Brentford goal in a 2-1 Emirates FA Cup Third Round victory over Middlesbrough, setting up Saman Ghoddos for the winner in the same game.

Halil departed for Turkey mid-way through January and enjoyed a fine end to the domestic season with Galatasaray. He scored on each of his final three starts as GS finished second in the table, missing out on the title on goals scored. The attacker’s form in Istanbul also put him on the radar of the Turkish National Team. A prolific goalscorer at Under-21 level, Halil netted on his senior debut against Azerbaijan in May. Included in Turkey’s Euro 2020 squad, Halil featured twice off the bench in the Group A games against Italy and Wales, his third and fourth appearances for his nation.

The Dutch-born attacker has been part of all three of Thomas Frank’s Premier League squads so far this campaign and made his seasonal bow against Forest Green Rovers, playing 68 minutes of last week’s EFL Cup victory.

Galatasaray have started well in the Turkish top flight, taking seven points from their opening three games. They’ve also beaten St Johnstone and Randers to qualify for the Europe League Group Stages where they have been drawn against Lazio, Marseille, and Locomotiv Moscow in Group E.
