David Raya speaks to Sky Sports

In-depth conversation with goalkeeper on Sky Sports website

19 October 2021

In the lead up to Brentford's Premier League West London derby against Chelsea, David Raya spoke to the Sky Sports website. The extensive interview not only looked ahead to the match, which The Bees lost at the weekend, but touched on a variety of other topics. There was a particular focus on David's work in helping Brentford's attack.

"It's just the style we play, we've always relied on it," said David, talking about his role with the ball at his feet. "Teams don't tend to press the goalkeeper as much, so I have a bit more time than the centre-backs. It's something we've worked out we can create chances from, across the last two seasons, through me being brave and being able to pick out the player who might not score, but will go on to create a chance.

"We play with a high line and don't play offsides, so it relies on me to have a really good starting position to not concede from counter-attacks. When I first arrived it took a few games getting used to, but then it clicked and it's worked brilliantly."

David discussed Brentford's season so far. The defeat to Chelsea was only Brentford's second of the season. They sit seventh after eight games, albeit with some teams yet to play, and David has only conceded seven goals in eight games, three of them in one match against Liverpool.

"It's been a dream start for us," David added in the piece, which can be seen in full here. "But it's in the character of the team, the DNA, to try to compete against everybody. We showed last year in our Carabao Cup run that we were able to compete in this league; we were already beating a few teams from the Premier League."
