In August new, strong anti-discrimination measures were announced by the Premier League including the introduction of a three season ban for a proven case of discrimination where no mitigating or aggravating factors are present. Brentford Football Club is very supportive of the Premier League’s approach and is aligned with this stance.
Together with all Premier League clubs, we are committed to making it clear that any form of discrimination is unacceptable and we wholeheartedly endorse the Premier League’s decision to take this decisive action across the entire league. The Club also supports the Premier League’s efforts to strengthen the Government’s Online Safety Bill to ensure the social media platforms take action to end discriminatory abuse on their services.
Whilst the vast majority of our fans enjoy our games in a welcoming and inclusive way, sadly, there is still a small minority of fans who continue to behave in a discriminatory and abusive way, going against the values of our Club, against the Ground Regulations and sometimes against the law.
The Club would like to take this opportunity to remind all supporters that we have a zero-tolerance approach towards discrimination of any kind and where sufficient evidence can be gathered to identity any fans (home or away) involved in discriminatory behaviour or abuse, we won’t hesitate to take action in line with our own internal procedures and the Premier League’s guidance, as we have already this season.
To make our approach as clear and transparent as possible, we will be working with representatives from our official fan groups BIAS and Bees United to confirm a new Sanctions and Banning Policy to be published on the Club’s website over the coming months. We will also be working with The Football Supporters Association (FSA) to make sure our policies are strong but fair, making sure anything we do for fans, includes fans.
In the meantime, we would like to reiterate our reporting processes for all fans should you witness or experience any discriminatory behaviour, whether in the stadium or online.
On matchdays, fans are encouraged to report any incidents during the match where possible, either by reporting this to a steward or by using our dedicated text line:
- Text BFC plus your message (including your seat location) to 62277 and we will be able to put in place enhanced monitoring and send in additional stewards where necessary. (A reminder of this number is displayed on the screens around the concourses on matchdays.)
On non-matchdays, fans can also send any reports to the Club by email to email@example.com giving as much information as possible on the location and identity of the individuals involved.
For every incident reported to us, a detailed process of investigation will be undertaken and we will liaise with the Premier League, police and other organisations such as The FA, Kick it Out and the Football Supporters Association where appropriate.
Our Club and players are proud to wear the ‘No Room for Racism’ campaign logo on their sleeves this season and our game against Leicester City on Sunday 24 October will be our dedicated No Room for Racism match. More information on the Premier League’s No Room for Racism Action Plan can be found at premierleague.com/noroomforracism.
Discriminatory abuse plays no part in the inclusive and welcoming environment we want to create at our Club. We will continue to work with our fans as part of our #BeeTogether campaign to make this a reality.
