In the 19th minute of Brentford's match against Newcastle United on Saturday, Bryan Mbeumo darted towards the edge of the penalty area. He cut back and bent a shot out of the reach of Karl Darlow and watched as it bounced back off the post. To double the disappointment, when Ivan Toney arrived to put it in, he was offside.

The game, which finished 3-3, was 1-1 at that point and Brentford were in the ascendeny. If Bryan's shot have been a few millimetres to the right, he would have scored and The Bees may have won. It was the seventh time Bryan has hit the post or crossbar this season, which has prompted the Premier League to investigate if he is the unluckiest player in the division.

In a piece here, the Premier League has outlined that Bryan is on course to break the record for the most time hitting the woodwork in a single season. The record stands at ten, by Robin van Persie for Arsenal in 2011/12. No player this season has got close to matching that misfortune, with Christian Benteke the nearest after seeing three shots hit the frame of the goal for Crystal Palace. Indeed apart from Brentford, who have hit the woodwork on a further two occasions, only Palace can match Bryan's individual tally.
