Brentford goalkeeper Patrik Gunnarsson has been named in the Iceland squad for upcoming friendly matches. Iceland are travelling around the world for a trio of games, starting against Mexico in Dallas, United States of America, next Sunday, 30 May. They then face Faroe Islands away from home on 4 June and Poland on 8 June.

Patrik is one of four goalkeepers named in the squad. Because of club commitments, he will not travel to Dallas for the Mexico match. He will be available for the games against Faroe Islands and Poland.

Iceland are playing friendly matches as they did not qualify for the UEFA European Championships, being held this summer. They have started qualification for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, to be held in Qatar next winter. They have won one and lost two of their first three qualification matches in Group J.

Patrik has been part of Iceland’s full international squad over the past 12 months as well as being first choice for Iceland Under-21. He made his debut at that level during the 2018/19 season and has now won 12 Under-21 caps. Patrik has helped Iceland qualify for the UEFA European Under-21 Championships, which started in Hungary and Slovenia, in March. But they were eliminated at that stage.

Patrik has been part of the national set-up for the past few years and represented his country at Under-17 level when he was just 15. He was called up to train with the full national squad in 2019. Patrik has played 26 games for Iceland at all levels and will hope to make a full international debut this summer.

Patrik is currently with Danish NordicBet Liga side Silkeborg Idrætsforening, better known as Silkeborg IF, where he is on loan until the end of the season. The 20-year-old spent the first half of the campaign on loan with the current NordicBet Liga leaders Viborg Fodsports Forening, conceding just nine goals in 12 outings. He has played 14 games for Silkeborg and conceded only one goal as they have clinched promotion, along with Viborg.
