Young Bees held in goalless draw

12 May 2021

Brentford B picked up a 0-0 draw against National League side Eastleigh at The SkyEx Community Stadium on Monday afternoon.

The young Bees perhaps had the best of the chances, but they were unable to claim the win against a resolute opponent who made it tough for the side.

Neither side managed to dominate in the early stages of the game as possession was frequently traded in difficult conditions with a swirling wind.

The National League side looked to test The Bees aerially when they could, but the back three of Luka Racic, Ben Hockenhull and one of the Trialists dealt with their challenges well in the early stages.

As the game began to open up, the young Bees created a really good opening midway through the first period as good play down the right involving Alex Gilbert saw the ball crossed into the area, and one of the Trialists in centre midfield struck an effort from just inside the box, but for a really smart stop from the Eastleigh keeper.

Brentford B used that to take the initiative in the game, and shortly after they came very close to breaking the deadlock. More good play down the right saw Aaron Pressley time his run to perfection as he worked the channel. Despite having an opponent near him narrowing the angle, the striker hit a venomous effort which crashed against the near post.

The young Bees continued to look to go ahead with the wide men in Wraynel Hercules and Lewis Gordon proving outlets, but the side weren’t quite able to create those clear-cut opportunities to test the Eastleigh keeper again. A deep cross to the far post from the right found Gordon, who managed to connect with the ball with his head, but for a deflection as the opponents managed to clear.

A lengthy stoppage preceded the half-time whistle as Dan Bradshaw was replaced after picking up a heavy knock.

It was The Spitfires who perhaps shaded things at the start of the second period as their physical approach proved a handful for Brentford B. Though chances weren’t exactly flooding in on Nathan Shepperd’s goal, the Welshman had to be lively to a couple of dangerous crosses and he was also brave at the feet of one of the Eastleigh forwards as he kept the ball out well.

A couple of Eastleigh efforts went over the bar before the young Bees managed to get more of a foothold in the game with Gilbert the likely man to produce for the side alongside the tireless running of Pressley.

There were a number of crosses from corners for the side, and with the wind causing havoc, they looked to benefit but the likes of Alex Wynter was consistent alongside the Eastleigh defenders in keeping The Bees at arm’s length for the rest of the game.
