Brentford striker Ivan Toney has won the Sky Bet Championship Golden Boot award for the 2020/21 season. Toney faced stiff competition throughout the season from the 2019 Golden Boot winner Teemu Pukki, and Blackburn’s Adam Armstrong, but the Bees striker’s 31 goals, scored in 3,900 minutes on the field, meant that Toney not only secured the award, but also set a new Championship record for goals scored in a season. He broke the record with the opening goal as Brentford beat Bristol City 3-1 yesterday.

It’s an impressive double for 25-year-old Toney, who also won the 2019/20 Sky Bet League One Golden Boot when at Peterborough United, proving himself to be one of the best marksmen in the English game. The award takes into account all league games, and does not include Play-Off fixtures. Ivan's feats also made him only the sixth player in Brentford FC history to score more than 30 goals in a league season.

Ivan said: “It means a lot to win this award again. I set out to win it at the start of the season; it hasn’t been won back-to-back for a while so that was something I wanted to do. It is a big achievement but one I obviously couldn’t have done without the support of my teammates as well as Thomas Frank and the coaching staff.”

The Sky Bet Championship Golden Glove was won by Swansea City’s Freddie Woodman, who kept 20 clean sheets.
