Brentford B returned to winning ways on the road as they beat a Forest Green Rovers XI 3-1 at the Oakfield Stadium in Wiltshire.
An early Aaron Pressley goal gave the side the advantage before Rovers hit back before the break. Two goals shortly after half-time from Gustav Mogensen and Lachlan Brook- his first for The Bees- gave the side a deserved victory on the day.
The likes of Pressley, Mogensen and Brook all started as a front three in Melksham, whilst the impressive Ryan Trevitt made a welcome return in midfield from injury with two assists in a game which also featured a number of Trialists towards the latter stages.
It was an excellent start for the young Bees as they went ahead just six minutes in through the Brentford number nine. An effort one minute beforehand would see his shot well blocked following a corner. In the next phase of play the goal did come, though, as Trevitt tricked his way into the box before chipping a cross into the box for Pressley to stoop and head in from just a few yards out.
The young Bees continued to see the better of the opening 20 minutes, and they weren’t far off doubling their lead when one of the Trialists managed to burst down the right before looping a cross into the box towards Mogensen, but for the keeper to intervene in the nick of time.
A Forest Green Rovers free-kick was their first attempt which really troubled Jared Thompson on 20 minutes when Isaac Hutchinson curled a low effort which the Brentford keeper managed to get a strong hand to and push behind.
Rovers then had their best spell around the half hour mark when Shaun Covil first hit the post after turning and shooting inside the box, though the referee blew his whistle for a handball in the build-up.
Another Hutchinson effort would go wide before the equaliser did come on 21 minutes as a long ball over the top saw Jake Young latch onto it before rounding Thompson and finishing from a tight angle.
The Bees almost took a lead into the break when the lively Trevitt looked good again in the inside left channel as he turned well before firing a low effort across goal, but it ended up just the wrong side of the post.
It was Neil MacFarlane’s side who began the second half the brighter of the two sides as they went back in front just seven minutes after the restart when Pressley drifted away to the right before crossing inch-perfectly for Mogensen to head home, despite the keeper’s best efforts.
Just eight minutes later the young Bees put themselves into a commanding position- and once again the goal was very well worked. After Julien Carré was alive to a quick free-kick, the ball found its way to Trevitt before he slotted the ball across goal for Brook to finish first time with composure.
Much of the action continued to stem from good Brentford B possession with the opponents unable to really test Ben Winterbottom- who had replaced Thompson at the interval. With the likes of another substitute Ethan Robb now alongside Aubrel Koutsimouka in the back line, they kept their opponents at arm’s length for much of the second half.
Winterbottom had to be alive to a swirling free-kick from the right on 70 minutes when he tipped over from Taylor Allen’s effort, before having to do a similar move from the resulting corner as the Brentford B man showed excellent awareness.
A distant shot on 90 minutes would see the keeper collect well from Allen, and that preceded another golden chance for the young Bees. In injury time one of the Brentford Trialists broke forward on the right and got in behind the Rovers defence before powering an effort high into the net, but for the offside flag which kept the score at 3-1 as the side returned to West London with a well-earned win.
