Brentford midfield player Jan Žambůrek has been placed on the stand-by list for the Czech Republic squad for the upcoming UEFA European Under-21 Championships. The Czech squad was announced on Monday and Jan, 20, was not named in the initial group of 23. There was a further list of players that will travel to meet with the squad ahead of the tournament and be on stand-by and Jan was included in that list.

The Under-21 Championships will be taking place in two stages this year. The group stage will be held in Hungary and Slovenia later this month, with 16 teams competing in four groups of four. The eight teams who reach the knock-out stages will head back to Hungary and Slovenia in late May to decide who takes home the trophy.

The Czech Republic are in Group B with Italy, Slovenia and Spain. They start with a game against Italy next Wednesday, 24 March, before taking on Slovenia and then Spain. The top two in each group will reach the knock-out stages.

Jan came through the ranks at Slavia Praha in Czech Republic before joining Brentford B in the summer of 2018. The following February, Jan became the first player born in the 2000s to appear in a competitive match for the Club when he made his debut against Hull City at Griffin Park. Aged 18, Jan was officially promoted to the First Team squad in August 2019 and made his full league debut against Blackburn Rovers that November. He has played 29 games for The Bees, 23 of them in the Championship and nine this season.

Jan has been a regular at youth international level for the Czech Republic in recent years. He has 45 caps from Under-15 to Under-19 level, with five goals but is yet to make his Under-21 debut. Last January, he was named runner-up in the Czech Republic Young Player of the Year award.
