International Recap: Finland and Turkey defeated

Dervisoglu plays in Wales defeat as Russia overcome Forss' Finland

17 June 2021

Halil Dervisoglu came on as a late substitute in Turkey's 2-0 defeat to Wales, while Marcus Forss remained on the bench during Finland's 1-0 loss in Russia.

Wednesday started with Group B action, Finland losing 1-0 to Russia in St Petersburg. The Finns thought they had taken the lead after only three minutes but Joel Pohjanpalo's header was ruled offside. Aleksey Miranchuk scored what would turn out to be the winner just before half-time, curling a left-footed effort into the top corner of Lukas Hradecky's net.

Denmark are now the only team in Group B not on three points and they play Belgium at 5pm this evening. A win for Belgium would all but confirm their place in the knockout stages, while the Danes will surely see this as a crucial game in the balance of the group. Mathias Jensen played in their first game, while Christian Norgaard remained on the bench, in what was an intensely emotional opening match on Saturday.

In Group A, Turkey were beaten 2-0 by Wales in Baku, Ajerbaijan. Brentford forward Halil Dervisoglu was brought on as a sub for the final 15 minutes of the game, which Wales led 1-0 at the time thanks to an Aaron Ramsey goal. Despite chances for Turkey, including a shot from Dervisoglu that was blocked, Connor Roberts sealed all three points in the dying seconds.

Later on, Italy beat Switzerland 3-0 in Rome. That result ensured Italy's qualification into the knockout round and also puts an immense amount of pressure on the final group game between Turkey and Switzerland. Turkey can't catch Wales in second place but could go through in third place if other results go their way. The Swiss can still overtake Wales but would need to better their result with Italy to sneak into second on goal difference.
