Ellery Balcombe joins Burton Albion on loan

Goalkeeper to spend season with Sky Bet League One side

29 June 2021

Brentford goalkeeper Ellery Balcombe has joined Burton Albion on loan for the season. Ellery, 21, completed the move to the Sky Bet League One side today, Tuesday 29 June, and has begun training with them as they begin preparations for the new season. He will link up again with Andy Quy, who had a spell as Goalkeeper Coach at Brentford during the 2019/20 season and now has the same role at Burton.

This is the latest loan spell for the former England youth international goalkeeper and his second in League One. Ellery spent the second half of last season on loan at Doncaster Rovers, after signing a long-term contract with The Bees. He has also spent time with Boreham Wood and Viborg Fodsports Forening, in Denmark.

Thomas Frank, Brentford FC Head Coach, said: “Ellery signed a long-term contract last season, and we are pleased with how he is developing. He is a young goalkeeper with great promise, and we have high hopes for the future. This is another chance for him to get playing time in competitive football at a good level.

“He had a good loan at Doncaster last season and played a lot of games. He learned a lot. He will be working with Andy Quy, who we know and who will help Ellery continue to develop. I wish him lots of luck for the season to come.”

Ellery joined The Bees as a seven-year-old and was part of the original Brentford B squad formed in 2016. He first earned a place on the bench for our Sky Bet Championship game against Fulham that November. He was also in the matchday squad the following season for our Emirates FA Cup tie against Notts County before joining National League side Boreham Wood on loan in August 2018. He made eight appearances for The Wood, conceding just ten goals, before injury cut short his time in Hertfordshire.

The following year Ellery went out on loan again, this time to Viborg FF. He made eight appearances in Denmark, keeping three clean sheets, before a back injury forced him to return to TW8 prematurely. He played 17 times for Doncaster last term after signing a new deal until 2025. Ellery was also on the substitute’s bench for two First Team matches.

Ellery has represented England at every level between Under-18 and Under-21. He was part of the 2017 Toulon Tournament winning side and has been a regular in England Under-21 squads over the past 18 months. In total, he has 18 caps for the Young Lions across four age groups.
