The UEFA European Championships 2020, being played in 2021, is entering its vital stages and Brentford's representatives have their eyes on the knock-out stages. Every team in Euro 2020, delayed a year because of the Covid-19 pandemic, has played two matches. The last round of group matches starts tonight and the five Brentford players involved all have a chance of making the last 16.

When Halil Dervişoğlu played for Turkey against Italy last week, he became the first contracted Brentford player to appear in the tournament. He followed in the footsteps of Henrik Dalsgaard, who is the only player to be on Brentford books and appear in a FIFA World Cup, as well Julian Jeanvier and Kamohelo Mokotjo, who appeared in the Africa Cup of Nations in 2019. Halil has appeared twice for Turkey while Marcus Forss has played one game for Finland and Mathias Jensen and Christian Nørgaard have been involved for Denmark, playing two games and one game respectively. Pontus Jansson is in the Sweden squad and has been an unused substitute so far.

Halil and Turkey face Switzerland in Baku, Azerbaijan, tonight, Sunday 20 June. They have lost to Italy and Wales so far but can still finish third in the group if they win their final game. The odds are against them being one of the four third-placed teams with the best records, but a big win tonight could see them progress.

Marcus, Mathias and Christian will then all play tomorrow, Monday. Finland beat Denmark in a game that will only ever be remembered for the remarkable work done to save the life of Christian Eriksen, who had a cardiac arrest on the pitch. They then lost to Russia while Denmark lost to Belgium. Finland face Belgium tomorrow and a draw would almost certainly see them through, either in second or as one of the best third-placed sides. If Denmark beat Russia they could finish second in Group B and would be certain to finish at least third. They probably need a big win to increase their chances of progression.

Pontus and Sweden are in very good shape ahead of a game with Poland on Wednesday, 23 June, having taken four points from two games. They are top of Group E and will definitely qualify if they avoid defeat. They will win the group if they take all three points.

The knock-out stages start on Saturday, 26 June with the Quarter Finals the following weekend. The event will run until 11 July, when the final will be held at Wembley Stadium in London. We will keep you up to date with all Brentford involvement in the event.
