Match Preview: Brentford vs West Ham United

A London derby for our first home friendly of the campaign

30 July 2021

We will welcome our biggest crowd yet to the Brentford Community Stadium on Saturday for our first home friendly ahead of the new Premier League campaign. David Moyes' European-bound West Ham United are the visitors for the first of two home friendlies ahead of the season.

THE OPPOSITION

West Ham United's 2020/21 season will certainly be one to remember having finished sixth in the division - their highest placing since returning to the Premier League in 2012. Recent campaigns have seen them battle around mid table, but a well drilled and talented squad saw them have an impressive season that they will hope to build on.

Last season was only the second time in Premier League history that United had netted more than 60 goals with Michail Antonio and Tomáš Souček both hitting double figures. The 47 goals conceded also made it their best defensive season since 2009.

The build-up to this campaign has been promising too. Tomorrow is The Hammer's sixth pre-season outing, with David Moyes' side winning three and drawing two of their games so far. Most impressive of those was last weekend's 6-2 win over Celtic which saw former Bee Said Benrahma find the target.

The upcoming campaign will see West Ham compete in Europe for the first time since 2017 and Moyes has made moves to strengthen his squad with the addition of goalkeeper Alphonse Areola from Paris St-Germain.

TEAM NEWS

Pontus Jansson, Christian Norgaard, and Mathias Jensen all returned to the training group this week at St George's Park meaning Thomas Frank has his full squad back in TW8.

Angelo Ogbonna has a slight issue while Declan Rice is yet to feature in pre-season following the European Championships.

THE MANAGER

David Moyes is highly experienced at this level having tasted management in the Premier League first in 2002.

A promising spell with Preston North End saw him picked up by Everton and he remained there for 11 years before Manchester United came calling in 2013 as the Scot succeeded Sir Alex Ferguson. He departed Old Trafford after one season at the helm and opted to move to Spain to take charge of Real Sociedad.

In 2016, he moved to the north east of England to take charge of Sunderland and then West Ham in 2017 with the aim of saving them from relegation. He confirmed their place in the Premier League for the following campaign before departing in May 2018 after not being offered a new contract. He returned to East London in December 2019 as he replaced Manuel Pelligrini and he has since gone on to develop a talented group of players who will be looking for more in the new season.
