Patrik Gunnarsson makes temporary switch to Silkeborg IF

Young stopper heads back out on loan

5 January 2021

Patrik Gunnarsson has returned to the Danish NordicBet Liga to join Silkeborg Idrætsforening, better known as Silkeborg IF, on loan until the end of the season.

The 20-year-old goalkeeper spent the first half of the campaign on loan with the current NordicBet Liga leaders Viborg Fodsports Forening, conceding just nine goals in 12 outings. Patrik kept four clean sheets during his time with Viborg, which included an assist on his debut against HB Köge and a Man of the Match performance against the club he will now spend the remainder of the season with.

For their part, Silkeborg are currently third in the table, seven points behind the leading duo with six games of the regular season to play. Ten points clear of seventh, Patrik looks set for a reunion with VFF in the end of season Play-Off round.

Brentford FC Head Coach, Thomas Frank, said: “We were very happy with Patrik’s spell at Viborg, who he left top of the league. Now he gets to go back to the same division and play for a big club who are fighting for that same prize of promotion. At this stage of his career, Patrik will really benefit from more first team football and we’re really pleased he gets that chance again with Silkeborg. We have a huge amount of belief in Patrik as a young goalkeeper and this will be another important step in his development.”

The last few months have also seen Patrik enjoy success at international level with Iceland’s Under-21s. The Brentford B graduate played three of Iceland’s four Under-21 European Championship Qualifiers in the autumn, helping them finish second in Group A and book a spot in this year’s Finals. They have been drawn against Russia, France, and Denmark in Group C with the group stages to be held in March ahead of May and June’s knockout stages.

In total, Patrik has ten caps at Under-21 level and was a part of the full Iceland squad for their Nations League A2 game against Belgium last September.

Patrik joined Brentford B in the summer of 2018, aged 17. His performances for the B Team during his maiden season, which included a Middlesex Senior Cup title, earned him a place on the substitute’s bench for seven First Team games. He was called upon to make his Brentford debut in a Sky Bet Championship win at Middlesbrough in March 2019. He replaced Daniel Bentley for the final 16 minutes, plus eight minutes of stoppage time, as The Bees picked up a 2-1 win.

He signed a new long-term deal in West London that June and was officially promoted to the First Team squad three months later. An international at every level between Under-16 and Under-21, Patrik played three games for Southend United in February and March last year on an emergency loan.
